Abohar, March 6

After the death of a 16-year-old boy here due to drug overdose about three days ago, his last rites were performed today by his mother, who was in judicial custody in a drug smuggling case. She was escorted from the jail by some relatives.

According to information, the boy had died reportedly due to excessive consumption of ‘chitta’. The boy was living alone because his mother was in jail in a drug peddling case and had a feud with his father, who was living separately.

When the boy died, there was no one to perform his last rites. As the relatives came to know about his death, they reached Ferozepur and got his mother released on parole. She was brought here on Wednesday to perform her son’s last rites.

City-1 police station in-charge Navpreet Singh said they had received information about the death of the boy and initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 on the statements of his relatives.
