Ropar, February 20
With the arrest of four women and their three male accomplices, the district police claimed to have busted a gang of extortionists here today. The women used to target well-off people by luring them and then extort money.
Ropar SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said local resident Anil Kumar had lodged a complaint, alleging that he was enticed by a woman on the phone to meet her at Nangal on February 15. He claimed that he was taken to a house and intoxicated following which his pictures were taken with two women in objectionable condition. He was then asked to pay Rs 5 lakh. He alleged that the gang even bought gold jewellery using his credit card.
Sandhu said after an investigation, the culprits were identified as Neelam, Rajni, Mamta and Pravin and Yashpal, Ganga Ram and Ripudaman. He said all accused had been arrested and their questioning would reveal as to how many people they had looted using the same modus operandi.
