Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Rajiv K Beri has convicted two —Vivek Sharma of Malerkotla and Avinash of Ludhiana — on the charges of the snatching purse of a teacher.



Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Rajiv K Beri has convicted two —Vivek Sharma of Malerkotla and Avinash of Ludhiana — on the charges of the snatching purse of a teacher. They have been ordered to undergo 5-year imprisonment. The court said persons involved in such offences should be dealt with sternly. The court declined the plea of leniency raised by the accused. A case against them was registered on June 11, 2006, following a complaint by Harpreet Kaur, a teacher of Joshi Nagar, Haibowal Kalan. The complainant told the police that she was riding her Activa on Dandi Swami Road. When she reached near Dahi Handi restaurant, the accused came on a motor bike and snatched her purse. Some passers-by had chased and apprehended Vivek, but his accomplice fled. However, he was arrested by the police later. oc

Hearing in case against movie actors adjourned

Ludhiana: The case against Bollywood actor Salman Khan and actress Shilpa Shetty under the SC & ST Act was adjourned till March 26 as the Judge concerned is on leave. A city lawyer had filed the case alleging that during an interview for the promotion of film Ek Tha Tiger, the actor had used word ‘Bhangi’, which was an offence under the SC & ST Act. The complainant had further alleged that it hurt their religious feelings and amounts to an insult to Lord Valmiki. oc

12-year jail for two for possessing intoxicants

Ludhiana: A local court has convicted Nitish Kumar of Amritsar and Satyjit of Ludhiana on the charges of possessing huge quantity of intoxicating injections and tablets. The duo was ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 12 years each. Fine of Rs 1.5 lakh each was also imposed upon the accused. A case against them was registered at the GRP police station on March 6, 2015. oc
