Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan implemented in Punjab

LUDHIANA: With a vision to providing holistic and quality education at pre-primary, primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary levels, the Government of India’s integrated scheme “Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan” has come into force in Punjab.

With a vision to providing holistic and quality education at pre-primary, primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary levels, the Government of India’s integrated scheme “Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan” has come into force in Punjab.

The state Education Department a couple of days ago announced an immediate formulation of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan 2018-19. The Director-General School Education Department (DGSE), Punjab sent a draft of new scheme to all District Education Officers (DEOs).

“This is hereby informed that Centrally sponsored schemes of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE) have been integrated by the Government of India into a single scheme “Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan”. An orientation programme on Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan for 2018-19 will be held at state headquarter”, read the instructions. Earlier, SSA was confined to elementary level (Class I to VIII) and RMSA for Class IX and X.

The new scheme envisages free and equitable secondary education with effective learning outcomes, irrespective of gender disparities, vocational training for weaker sections including persons with disabilities by 2030.

The scheme provides transport facility to students from Class I-VIII and for Children with Special Needs (CWSN). The transport facility for children in sparsely populated areas and urban areas where schools are not available or Urban Deprived Children may be provided for Rs 6,000 per annum.

Girls would be provided self-defence training for 3 months. A provision has been made to provide schools an amount of Rs 3,000 for 3 months for Classes VI to XII.

Vocational education would be introduced as an integral part of general education at Secondary and Senior level. Under the programme, there is a provision for arranging hands-on training for students in industrial set-up and on-job training may be provided during vacations for at least 80 hours. However, no separate cadre of teachers would be sanctioned by the Centre. The draft mentions that all teachers were ultimately the responsibility of the state government.


Holistic Education
