Fire Safety Week at DMCH

A series of awareness lectures were delivered at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and Hero DMC Heart Institute and College of Nursing during the ‘Fire Safety Week’, which was observed from April 14 to April 21.

The DMCH Youth Club along with the Fire Department of the hospital, made the people aware about various precautions to be taken to avoid fire accidents during an event organised here on Saturday.

The DMCH Principal, Dr Sandeep Puri, and Vice-Principal and chief cardiologist, HDHI, Dr Gurpreet S Wander, lauded the efforts of the Youth Club for organising awareness programme. They appreciated the role of the DMCH Youth Club and faculty members, especially Dr Sanjeev Uppal, head of plastic surgery, in organising the event.

In his address Dr Uppal said, “Fire accidents are quite common. Many precious lives can be saved if proper precautions are taken.”

“In India, around 25,000 persons die every year in fire and related accidents. The main cause of these accidents is bursting of gas cylinders or stoves and electrical short circuits. Many of these deaths can be easily prevented through proper precautionary measures,” he added.

“Fire can cause major disasters and loss of lives in buildings, including offices, hotels, shopping centres, hospitals, schools and homes. Such disasters can be easily avoided if proper fire safety practices are observed,” he said.

“It is in the interest of the community at large to pay attention to fire safety techniques. People can keep themselves safe by taking steps to avoid fire accidents,” Dr Uppal added.

An impressive slide presentation was given to the public present in OPD Block and other areas. Nandisha, Aakansha and Abhinav Gupta, all medical students and members of the DMCH Youth Club, were also present on the occasion.
