Ludhiana, February 20

A one-day sensitisation programme was held at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for district administrators of ‘model district’ Ludhiana regarding effective disposal of bio-medical waste.

To reduce and eliminate the release of highly toxic gases from the disposal of medical waste, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has developed project in five states of country including Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Orissa.

As many as 28 model hospitals have been selected and Ludhiana is declared as the Model District Hospital for the state of Punjab.

The workshop was organised by official bearers of Punjab Pollution Control Board along with representatives of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and faculty members from MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.

During the workshop, an active discussion was held among the participating delegates to frame proper guidelines for effective disposal of bio-medical waste.

The workshop was attended by Vishesh Sarangal, Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, as the chief guest.

Dr Pruthish and Dr Lalitha from MS Ramaiah Medical College, Banglore, presented the technical aspects of the project and apprised that in addition to the literature for bio-medical waste management, all model district hospitals will be given a one-day training on management of bio-medical waste.

After the inaugural session, technical session was held wherein the participating delegates were informed about the ill-effects of inadequate bio-medical waste management and the desired tools required for proper disposal of the same.
