The singers in Mixtape Punjabi

Jasmine Singh

What happens when 25 Punjabi singers collaborate with each other, over 14 episodes, live? Well, you have Mixtape Punjabi. A concept that has already gained popularity with T–series Mixtape Season 1, has now set its platform for Punjabi singers.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Mixtape Punjabi will not only have an ensemble of singers but also of singers, instruments, melody and style.

The show has been directed by Ahmed Khan, and Abhijit Vaghani has added a vibrant touch of instruments like algoza, shehnai, bakchu, chellos, mandolian, Xylophone have been used to create magic on screen.

It seems like our party list is ready, with Punjabi singers like Gippy Grewal, Guru Randhawa, Daler Mehndi, Navraj Hans, Harrdy Sandhu, Gitaz Bindrakhia, Amber Vashisht, Hans Raj Hans, Sharry Mann, Jashan Singh, Harbhajan Mann to name a few on the list of Mixtape, it definitely sounds like a live magic.

Singer Amber Vashisht has collaborated with Akhil Sachdeva on his track Jey Tu Na Mileya. The singer from Ludhiana calls this as his best professional experience. “The entire team of T- series is thoroughly professional, which made shooting for the track in Mumbai a wonderful experience,” shares Amber, who thanks Neeraj Kalyan, president T- Series for his experience.  Amber feels that a platform like this not only brings singers together but also offer audiences something new and different.

Yet another popular singer-actor Gippy Grewal has collaborated with Harrdy Sandhu and Neha Kakkar on the Car Nachdi Horn Blow remix. “Singing live with different artistes takes the song to a different level. Even though the songs are old but the treatment is completely new, which gives the song a new look. To me Mixtape is a creative collaboration of artistes with different styles.”

In one of the interviews, Bhushan Kumar has spoken about the huge market for Punjabi songs in India. “After the humongous response of Mixtape Season 1, fans wanted more and thus we decided to tap Punjabi songs as it is a huge market in India and has hit songs with millions of views. With renowned Punjabi artistes and musicians coming together, this special edition of Mixtape Punjabi will give you a variety in the arrangement of songs and a brilliant musical experience.”

Popular singer Guru Randhawa, who is collaborating with Neha Kakkar on High-rated Gabru and Ban Ja Rani, cannot agree more. The singer has many back-to-back hits in various Bollywood films this year. “T-series is the other name for innovation and unparalleled creativity that takes a new shape every project. Collaborating with other singers from Punjab means bringing in new flavour and style, which not only gives a new high to the singer but to the song as well.”

Music director of the show, Abhijit Vaghani, shares the sentiments too, “ Mixtape Punjabi is bigger than Mixtape 1. We have gone bigger with production. We have experimented a lot with fusion. After that, I got an idea that let’s just explore the regional side of our country and what best we could do was Punjabi. Because, we all dance to Punjabi songs at parties and it’s almost like a universal language in India. And it’s beautiful, even the sad songs. And of course, combine it with experimental production, which is commercial and making it go out in clubs and you know all the sad songs, featuring legends like Hans Raj Hans, Harbhajan Mann, Daler Mehndi.  It just feels like it’s a blast and it’s an unbelievable season’.
