Life doles out all it has to; it’s on us how we respond! For Sandeep Guron, the only strategy when the darkest hours hit her was to try something new. YouTube came to her rescue and in no time she was dishing out cakes and muffins and perfect Swiss rolls!

And, yes, that spirit sailed her through 12 cycles of chemotherapy and countless radiation sessions. When cancer hit this wife of Air Force Group Captain Jangveer Singh Guron, the couple took it as an opportunity to spend time, almost a year, together, having never done that due to his work commitments. “Dil ko samjhane ki baat hai. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I compared it to someone going through a bypass or uterus removal. Just a disease and me on way to getting cured,” says Sandeep, a resident of Sector 31. While others get into ‘why me’ syndrome, not for a moment she lost faith in the almighty; she just worked and prayed for recovery.

Positive note

Manpreet Singh, an entrepreneur from Patiala didn’t know that he is under treatment for cancer until he shared the symptoms and therapies with a friend. His family has shielded the ‘truth’ and already getting him the best treatmentmedicine could offer! Once he knew, Manpreet kept his positive outlook intact. “Admit or not, we are puppets in this world; how and when we die is not in our hands, we can only know how to live and that’s what I do,” shares Manpreet, who along with disease also got over his insecurity of how his business would fare sans him or who will stand by him in the need of the hour! “Family’s support is a must because there will be many vulnerable moments when you can’t gather courage; you need your loved ones to lean on at that time.”

Survival instinct

For the Sharmas – Pradeep and Shashi — cancer struck twice to each of them, but they never gave in. As soon as Shashi was diagnosed with cancer, the couple attended a scheduled wedding at night and in the morning, with mehendi intact on her hands; she was wheeled into the operation theatre! Since then, they have counselled many and feel proud to have saved some lives.
