5 ways to make friends at work

If not having friends at work  made you feel isolated in 2015, then change this in 2016. In fact, workplace friendships can turn into long-lasting relationships if you play your cards right. Here are five tips on how to establish good friendships at work and strike the right cord at the workplace.

1Be Yourself: If you are trying to make friends at workplace, you have to be yourself. Pretending to be someone that you are not will only hurt you in the long term. Honesty is the most powerful magnate to draw people to you. Express your opinions honestly to reveal the real you. At the same time also hear what others have to say with an open mind. You don’t have to always agree with everything that your co-workers have to say, but on the other hand be open to changing your mind based on what they say.

2Start on a positive note: Sharing candid conversations can strengthen a bond, but it’s wise to start off with sharing positive experiences. The first few conversations with peers at work are the most important and should demonstrate positivity and skill rather than weaknesses on the professional or personal front. Discuss good ideas and innovations, not the bad performance of others, for example.

3Greet people: Often people forget (or are afraid) to greet their co-workers. Just start by saying "hi" or "goodbye" with a smile, and you will often find a co-worker is happy to do the same to you the next time.

4Be balanced: The best way to make long-lasting friendships at work is to avoid petty gossip. Keep a positive demeanor and steer clear of office politics. You may not make a bunch of friends but the ones you do, will make your life at work easier and free of drama.

5Set an example, help others: Be the 'star' who does good work, finishes early - and uses the spare time to help others who need the help.  The best way to make friends is to help them succeed.
