Government College for Women (GCW) Parade came into existence on June 1, 1944 as Maharani Mahila College through Mahila Education Society at the instance of Maharani Tara Devi. It was taken over by the J&K Government on November 25 ,1953 and was renamed as GCW Parade, Jammu. It continued to be the only women college of Jammu province up to 1971.

The college was granted the Autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on January 20, 2014.

Subjects offered: The college offers the largest number of courses ranging from Arts to Science and Commerce to BCA with 61 subject combinations available to the students. Around 6,500 students are pursuing their degrees on various disciplines, including PG in Home Science and Music. The college has received Grant in aid from UGC for nine career-oriented courses that include Functional English, Archeology and Museology, Tourism and Travel Management, Bio-Informatics , Food Processing and Quality Control and Information Management. 

GCW Parade also runs UGC-approved career oriented courses besides add on courses. These include Information Management, Bio Informatics, Tour and Travel Management, Functional English, Archaeology and Musicology, Translation, Social Work and Food Preservation and Quality Control. 

Number of seats:

  • 20 seats in Bio-informatics. 
  • 40 seats in rest of the courses. All the available seats are filled up on the basis of merit in the qualifying examination.

Admission update

Cut-off percentage: Highest  percentage in Arts stream was 90 per cent. In Medical stream  63 per cent. In Non-Medical stream  55.6 per cent.  Commerce stream, the highest score was 93 per cent while 47 per cent was the lowest.  


Maulana Azad Memorial (MAM) College

MAM Post Graduate College will complete 63 year of its existence in September 2017.  It started its journey as Prince of Wales' College in Jammu in 1907 and was renamed as Government Gandhi Memorial Arts College on May 20, 1948 and later in 1960 was renamed again as Government MAM College, Jammu after Maulana Abul Azad, the first Minister for Education in the Indian Government. 

The college has separate blocks for Sciences and Earth Sciences, a library, Boys Hostel, Canteen and newly constructed Administrative Block.

Subjects offered:  Science stream (Non-Medical), Arts stream, BBA and BCA. In addition to the regular academic courses, college is also running add on courses in subjects such as Data Care Management (run by Department of Computer Applications), Tourism Management (run by Department of Management studies), to cater to the need of job market. 

Remedial Classes: The college has inbuilt mechanism to identify slow learners and advanced learners'. Special emphasis is given to the Slow Learners by organising the remedial classes. The said classes are specifically conducted for SC, ST, OBC, PH, EB etc., after regular class-work. Moreover, Advanced Learners' are also encouraged to participate in academic and extension activities. 

Admission dates: The admissions for the new academic session will get underway in the month of June followed by commencement of classes in mid July, 2017.

Student strength: 2900 (approx)

Last year's cut off: Highest percentage in Science stream was 90 per cent, while the minimumwas 50 per cent. In Arts stream, the highest was around 80 per cent, while 45 per cent was the cut off.


GGM Science College

Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College dates back to 1905, when Maharaja Pratap Singh announced the opening of the college as Prince of Wales College. The college actually started functioning from April 20, 1907.  It was shifted to the present campus on September 18, 1912.

The college strongly believes in blending tradition and modernity in order to instill age-old values amongst the students and yet remain relevant to the 21st century academic scenario by transforming and modernizing its academic and extra-curricular schedule. 

The main office of the newly created Cluster University, Jammu is also being constructed at the college. 

Faculty: Teaching faculty is also regularly deputed to attend refresher courses/orientation courses, summer school and national/ international seminars, conferences and workshops. . 

Subjects offered:  PG English, PG Geology, BSc (Three Year Course) and BCA (3-year programme). Add on course include Certificate Courses in Industrial Electronics, Web Designing and Advanced Course in Computer Applications. The college which is also having the distinction of being Nodal College of Jammu City.

Last year's cut off: Medical stream 45 per cent; Non-medical stream 51 per cent; in electronics 60 per cent; Geology 68 per cent

Admission dates: The admission notification is most likely to be issued by Higher Education Department in June. New session from July.


Cluster Universities

The Cluster Universities have been established in the state under centrally-sponsored Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) which was launched in 2013 by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to run a series of additional and advanced courses in the existing colleges, with one of the colleges each in Srinagar and Jammu acting as lead college for the varsities.The Cluster University, Jammu comprised five colleges namely:

  • Government MAM College
  • SPMR College of Commerce
  • Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar
  • Government College of Education, Canal Road
