Options after BAMS

Q. I am doing bachelor’s in Ayurveda (BAMS) after which I will start my internship. Can you please suggest some other opportunities besides doing an MD in Ayurveda.

— Kiran Baweja

A.There are several related courses such as pharmaceutical management, clinical research, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical medicine and regulatory affairs, hospital administration etc. at the Postgraduate and PhD level, that you could look into.

However, make sure this decision is in sync with your career aspirations and interests. It may therefore be a good idea to take the decision after completing your internship.

You may well decide to explore research options in Ayurveda that involves data retrieval, data management, clinical research, report writing, graphics and digitizing ancient manuscripts.

Alternatively, you could opt for short term courses like Social & Preventive Medicine, Modern Anatomy, Principles of Medicine, Physiology, ENT, Forensic Medicine, Public Health Administration, etc. Increasingly, pharma companies are manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines and formulations which are fast gaining popularity. More and more health spas and panchakarma centres are coming up to cater to Indians as well as tourists, especially foreigners. In fact, the government has positioned India as a healthcare and fitness destination.

Scope in mechatronics

Q.I am a non-med student studying in Class XII. I ’ve heard that Mechatronics is a hot field in engineering. What should I look for in a college that offers courses in this subject?

— Umang Halan

A.Mechatronics integrates multiple disciplines such as mechanical, electronic, electronics, telecom and IT. It’s a multi-disciplinary approach that combines precision mechanics, electronic control and systems thinking for designing products and manufacturing processes with a high level of precision, accuracy, efficiency and reliability.

A machine or manufacturing system that’s mechatronically governed can be likened to a mechanical body governed by an electronic brain.

Mechatronics is the field of the future. It finds wide application across industries ranging from robotics, nanotechnology, AI, aviation and automobiles to mining, oil exploration and bio-medical systems.

Mechatronics involves the study of core mechanical engineering and electronics with a fair share of mathematics and IT.

Several colleges now offer this specialization even at the BTech level. However, while selecting a college, look for those with high-end robotic labs and advanced machine-testing facilities that provide you a wide-arching exposure.
