Healthcare has become one of India’s fastest growing sectors, both in terms of revenue and employment. It is a vast and diverse domain, comprising hospitals, health insurance, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical outsourcing, telemedicine, medical tourism, and medical and surgical equipment, etc. Indian healthcare can be categorised into two — public sector and private sector. India’s healthcare industry is predicted to be one of the fastest growing sectors and is expected to reach $275 billion in the coming decade.

A diverse sector

There is great diversification in the healthcare sector and opportunities are growing by leaps and bounds. Medical technology and medical service sector offer umpteen opportunities. Increasing competition and the need to maximise profits are prompting lead businesses in healthcare to explore latest trends and dynamics. This is leading to a great demand for well-trained healthcare professionals.

Growth prospects

Today healthcare is not limited to hospitals. Thus, employment opportunities in this sector are also not confined to hospital jobs. Software engineers, who develop healthcare software and applications, workforce in health research and development (R&D) for new techniques and drugs, are also job profiles in the sector.

Technology, a major player

The application of existing technology and advent of new technology in the healthcare is going to be the primary driver of change. In the coming years, a massive expansion in this sector with deployment of tools such as telemedicine, home ICUs, virtual hospitals, tele-radiology, hospital information systems, hospital management information systems, online, electronic medical records, etc. is expected. Greater use of information technology is already creating new avenues of jobs.

New jobs make a mark

Pharmaceutical sector promises many opportunities as well. New job profiles like biomedical engineers, dental hygienists, occupational therapists, medical sonographers, radiologic technologists, health information technicians, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, surgical technologists, phlebotomists are now becoming as popular as the traditional job profiles.

Recruitment drive

Reports predict over 40 million new jobs in the healthcare sector by 2020 with a $200 billion increase in revenue generation. Increased investment in this sector, creation of super specialty healthcare facilities, addition of new hospital beds, and growing numbers in medical tourism are expected to increase the vacancies.

With the Medical Council of India recognising emergency medicine as one of the specialities, new opportunities are emerging in the areas of emergency medicine and paramedics.

Boost for private segment

Private sector has emerged as a very strong player in the healthcare sector in the last few years. The healthcare sector and allied industries such as medical and surgical appliances are attracting foreign investments,  further making it a go-to sector for job seekers.
