After completing graduation, students look forward to enroll in unconventional courses. They aim to learn more, grasp more and opt for curriculums that bring about their all-round development.

In the recent years, opting for fellowship programmes has become a very popular practice with youngsters. For those who don’t want to go for post-graduation or wish to delay it for some years and in the meanwhile take up research work, these fellowship programmes are the ‘go-to’ option right after graduation.

What is a fellowship programme?

Fellowships are short-duration programmes, generally around a year or so, and focus on the holistic development of the individual. Fellowships can serve multiple purposes, for example, students can take up fellowship programmes after completing their graduation for research purposes. Also, they can specialise in a field and expand their horizon in that particular area.

Opportunities in India

There are several opportunities available in India for students who want to take up fellowships in various disciplines. Some of the most popular ones are Teach for India Fellowship,  Legislative Assistants to Members of Parliament (LAMP) fellowship, William J Clinton fellowship and Young India Fellowship (YIF).

The Young India Fellowship

Each year, the YIF, sees an increase in number of students opting for it after completing their graduation. The programme is offered at Ashoka University in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Moreover, the academic collaborations for this programme also include names like King’s College, Trinity College and Sciences Po etc.

The structure of the programme is spread over eight terms and each term lasts six weeks. The disciplines of these terms range from art appreciation to women and gender to fundamentals of law to the political economy of India’s development and a lot more. The faculty is an added bonus as they are experts in their respective fields. They come from various universities and professional backgrounds and the teaching methods are not restricted to the conventional classroom methods. The focus is more on practical learning and real-time application.

The placement options after the course are vast and in any discipline of your choice. From entrepreneurship to journalism, there are many alternatives. The course, however, is not placement oriented in the first place. It aims at developing lateral thinking skills of students. Also, it promises one a vast exposure in various subjects. Students may opt for a job after the course or may decide to take up research or post graduation (for graduate students) the options are endless.
