Entrance tests for DU

Q. Our daughter is currently taking her Class XII Board exams. She is very keen to join bachelor’s course in Delhi University. However, we’ve heard that DU is conducting entrance tests for all admissions. She’s very worried, as she has had no coaching or guidelines for preparing for these tests. Please suggest how she should proceed to prepare for the entrance test.  — Kamini Khanduja

A. Don’t worry. While several new reforms and tweaks were proposed in the admission process, no major changes will be effected in this admission season — thanks to insufficient infrastructure combined with logistical and time constraints.

The only minor differences being that all registration and payment of fees has to be done online, and the student’s Aadhar card is mandatory for admissions.

Computer-based tests for admission to  BA (Hons) in Business Economics (BBE), Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Bachelor of Financial Investment & Analysis (BFIA) in DU will be conducted in three shifts (of 2-hrs each) across multiple cities: Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Ranchi, Trivandrum and Varanasi.

And don’t worry, the dates are yet to be announced (most likely by first week of May). Only one application per candidate will be allowed. Facilitation centres are being set up a month in advance to familiarise students with the CBT. Quite like the previous year, there will be 5 cut-off lists.

Institutes for sports management courses

Q.I’ve just completed my bachelor’s in physical education. Could you suggest some relevant courses in sports management in India and if possible abroad?  — Zorawar Singh Palta

A.Sports managers handle the business end of sports. From sports agents and scouts, to senior coaches, athletic directors and facility managers, these savvy professionals help run major league teams, sports centres, private companies, gyms, golf resorts and more.

A good course in sports management will familiarise you with knowledge of business planning and strategy, marketing, negotiation, sponsorships and endorsements, finance and data-processing. You will also acquire public relations, event management, customer service, leadership and managerial skills, besides learning about the relevant legal issues and the global sports sector.

However, don’t expect to land a high-paying job as soon as you graduate. It will take a while before you hit big time.

In terms of courses, there are now quite a few options to pick from in India itself:

  • IISWBM, Kolkata

Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Mgt (1-year) from Calcutta University

  • GGSIPU, Delhi (www.ipu.ac.in).

MBA (Sports Mgt)

  • International Institute of Sports Management, Jai Hind College Campus, Churchgate, Mumbai (www.iismworld.com)

Master’s in Sports Mgt (1-yr FT).

  • National Academy of Sports Management, Malad E, Mumbai

  • Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, (D/o Sports Mgt & Sports Journalism), Gwalior.

Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Mgt (1-year)

  • Allagappa Institute of Tamil Nadu, TN

MBA/distance learning

  • Calcutta University

PG Diploma in Sports & Mass Communication Mgt.

  • Tamil Nadu Physical Education & Sports University, Chennai (www.tn.gov.in)

MBA (Sports Mgt / Sports Tech), 2-yrs

PG Dip in Fitness & Wellness Mgt (1-yr)

  • Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences, Pune

PG Diploma in Sports Mgt (1-year FT), 6-month

  • Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Science, New Delhi

Master’s in Sports Management degree at most universities abroad is a one year (full-time) or two years (part-time) programme, although this will depend on the norms of the country you choose to study in.

Look specifically for courses that offer an internship

You can check out the current global rankings of courses available online depending on the country you wish to study in (US, Canada, Australia, Britain, Italy, Spain, Germany etc).

How much would a degree in Canada cost?

Q. We would like to send our son to Canada for pursuing a degree in technology. Could you please give us an idea of the costs involved? — Kumar Thareja

A.There are two main components of the cost of studying in Canada: tuition and living expenses.

The average undergraduate tuition fee in Canada is relatively lower than in a number of other popular study destinations. It can vary across universities/colleges and programmes, starting at around $ 10,000 p.a. (about Rs 6.7 lakh).

While courses in Arts and Humanities tend to be cheaper, subjects such as engineering and medicine are among the more expensive.

In terms of living expenses, accommodation would cost around $ 7,500-15,000 per year (Rs 5 - 10 lakh). Living costs are generally higher in the bigger cities.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of books and supplies, insurance, bus pass, etc. (The last two are often included in the tuition fee).

However, even after you add up all these costs, you’ll find that Canada ends up being a cheaper study destination as compared to Australia, Singapore, USA and the UK (according to HSBC & QS World Rankings).

Besides, students are also eligible for a postgraduate work permit once they’ve successfully completed their academic programme.
