Two brothers, Johnsons Masih and Rajesh, were attacked with sharp-edged weapons by armed assailants at separate places-- near DAV College on the highway and at Chaupati in Hargobind Nagar locality on Wednesday night. The injured were admitted to the civil hospital. Although assailants could not be identified, property dispute among the brothers was said to be cause of the attack. Both of them have leveled allegations against each other. The police have registered a case.

Councilors protest ‘favouritism’

Councilors of the SAD-BJP in the Phagwara Municipal Corporation have registered their protest against the alleged indifferent behaviour of government officers. They also gheraod the office of MC Commissioner Davinder Singh. Phagwara Councilors, including Deputy Mayor Surinder Singh Walia, Ranjit Singh Khurana, Anurag Mankhand and Sarabjit Kaur questioned the MC Commissioner that in which protocol Phagwara MLA Som Parkash (belonging to BJP) was ignored and a compactor installed near Government Senior Secondary School was inaugurated by the defeated Congress candidate, Joginder Singh Maan, a few days back. The protesting councilors alleged indifferent attitude of MC Commissioner towards the wards represented by councilors of the SAD-BJP.

No-Horn Day

Launching a campaign against increasing noise pollution, the Indian Medical Association, Phagwara, headed by Dr Anil Tandon observed a 'No-Horn Day' on Wednesday. A function in this regard was organised at the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, which was presided over by Deputy Medical Commissioner Sarika. IMA secretary Rajan and SMO Kamal Kishore inspired people to reduce the use of loud horns which could develop deafness and even become a cause of heart attack.

Five injured in group clash

Five residents, including two women, sustained injuries from sharp weapons in a group clash in Balalon village on Tuesday night. The injured, Som Lal, Sunita Rani, Asha Rani, Ranjit Singh and Tersem Singh, were admitted to the civil hospital. A land dispute was said to be the cause behind the incident. A case has been registered in this regard.

Helpline to deal with drug addiction

Amritsar: The district administration on Thursday initiated a helpline number for drug addicts and their families so that they can inquire about drug de-addiction facilities at government-run drug de-addiction centres in the district. Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said people could call at 0183-5093741 and 0183-5093759 for facilities at the Swami Vivekananda Drug De-addiction Centre, located at Government Medical College, and at 099146-65413 and 0183-2423332 for facilities at the Government Rehabilitation Centre. Sangha said the drug use was a social problem and society as a whole should come forward to free the young generation from the drug menace —oc
