Former kanungo held for taking Rs 1 lakh bribe in Jalandhar

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a retired kanungo for accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. The suspect has been identified as Sutantar Singh, a resident of Rahon in Nawanshahr.

Recording given to VB as evidence

The complainant also recorded the conversation while the kanungo was demanding the bribe and submitted it to the VB as evidence. The VB Range, Jalandhar, investigated the complaint and found the allegations true and correct.

Was demanding Rs 1 lakh more

An official spokesperson for the state VB said the complainant has alleged that the suspect took illegal gratification of Rs 1 lakh to help in a revenue case regarding division of ancestral land. He was demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh more in the name of tehsildar and patwari.

An official spokesperson for the state VB said a case was registered against the suspect on an online complaint lodged by Harmel Singh, a resident of Chhokra village of Nawanshahar tehsil, on the Chief Minister anti-corruption action line.

The spokesperson said the complainant has alleged that the suspect took illegal gratification of Rs 1 lakh to help in a revenue case regarding division of ancestral land. He was demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh more in the name of tehsildar and patwari.

The complainant also recorded the conversation while the kanungo was demanding the bribe and submitted it to the VB as evidence. The VB Range, Jalandhar, investigated the complaint and found the allegations true and correct.

On the basis of this report, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the suspect at the VB police station, Jalandhar Range. The suspect was later arrested. Further investigations were on in the case, said the spokesperson.
