Restore water supply from Giri: CM

SHIMLA: Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today directed the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department to immediately restore water supply from the Giri scheme to ensure daily distribution of water to people of Shimla and its suburbs.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today directed the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department to immediately restore water supply from the Giri scheme to ensure daily distribution of water to people of Shimla and its suburbs.

Presiding over a meeting of officers of the IPH Department, Electricity and Municipal Corporation (MC) Shimla, he said an action would be taken against those who have failed to plug leakages and overflow of the water tanks. Irrigation and Public Health Minister Vidya Stokes also attended the meeting. He directed IPH officials to complete the work on the Rs 105 crore Garoh-Gandal water supply scheme in the Shimla rural Assembly segment by the mid of April to cater to a population of around 75,000 in 41 panchayats.

It was informed in the meeting that the town has a total requirement of 44 MLD water within limits of MC and the total requirement outside MC Shimla was around 4 MLD. With the repair of the Giri rising main pipe, around 5 to 6 MLD of the total water supply would increase.

Principal Secretary (IPH) Anuradha Thakur said the entire rising main of Giri water supply scheme was being replaced and work had been almost completed which would add 5 to 6 MLD to the existing supply.
