KURUKSHETRA: The state government has decided to increase the monthly internship stipend for the students of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) to Rs 10,000.

Kurukshetra, May 16

The state government has decided to increase the monthly internship stipend for the students of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) to Rs 10,000.

Students of Shri Krishna AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) University here were protesting against the payment of Rs 4,500 as internship allowance.

Dr Krishan Kumar, Registrar, said the notification for the enhanced stipend was expected to be issued in the next few days will benefit a total of 50 BAMS students.

A delegation of students led by the registrar had met the authorities concerned in Chandigarh on Monday.

“The Finance Minister has approved the revised allowance and we have been informed that orders will be released soon after the completion of official paperwork,” he said.

“BAMS is a five-and-a-half-year course, including one-year internship programme, for which interns should be paid enough. The students have been protesting for a hike in stipend for the past several years. The state government should fix the stipend at Rs 15,000 as paid by the Delhi Government,” said a senior teacher.

Students’s protest affected work at AYUSH University’s outpatient department (OPD) earlier this month. They also boycotted classes to show solidarity with the protesters. — TNS
