Putting their differences aside for a while, various factions of the Congress today came together in seeking dismissal of the state government for its failure to stop rapes.

Senior Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Union minister and Rajya Sabha member Selja, All-India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev, state Congress Legislative Party leader Kiran Choudhry and several sitting and former MLAs of the party today met Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and submitted him a memorandum demanding dismissal of the state government and recommendation of the President’s rule in the state.

“Recent incidents of rape and murder of young girls in Jind, Panipat, Pinjore and Faridabad have rendered it difficult for women to venture out in the state. Once known for its development and peaceful atmosphere, Haryana has become a safe haven for criminals. On one side, small girls were falling prey to rapists, but on the other side the state government was busy holding festivals on Gita and Saraswati rather than improving law and order,” the memorandum said.

The memorandum further said that there were reports that gangs of criminals from Uttar Pradesh had shifted their operations to Haryana looking into the “lax” attitude of the state government and the police.

It further said that despite being a small state standing at 11th position in terms of population, the state witnessed 1,057 murders, 3,922 kidnappings, 1,187 rapes and 1,325 incidents of arson in 2016.

The memorandum said that though figures of 2017 were not yet available, the crime had increased rather than decreasing. “In view of the alarming disorder in the state, we request you to dismiss the state government and recommend the President’s rule in the state,” the Congress leaders said in their memorandum.

“The law and order is in complete shambles and the government is unable to bring the situation under control. I have met family members of the victims and they said they wanted CBI probe as they have lost faith in the state police,” said Hooda. Selja said that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar should himelf resign taking moral responsibility.

BJP flays Hooda, Tanwar for ‘politicising’ rape issue

  • The state BJP on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, state Congress president Ashok Tanwar and Congress MLA Randeep Singh Surjewala for politicising the recent incidents of rape.
  • In a statement issued here, state BJP media in charge Rajiv Jain said that had the Congress taken any effective steps against the skewed sex ratio and harassment of women, people with pervert mentality would not have grown in society.
  • He said that during three years of second term of the state government led by Hooda, 3,832 girls were killed in the womb alone in Karnal.
  • Condemning the recent incidents of gangrapes, Jain said that the state government would take strict action in all these cases and ensured that the culprits get maximum punishment. — TNS
