80-year-old keeps public park litter-free

Chandigarh: Sohan Lal Arora (80) is a good samaritan who can be often spotted picking plastic bags, bottles and other waste littered in a public park in Panchkula town and putting it in dustbins. Arora, who retired as a regional manager from Punjab National Bank more than two decades ago, has been doing this for the past eight years ever since he has settled in Sector 20 of Panchkula town. People come to the park for their morning and evening walks, often consume eatables or drink water or soft drinks and throw plastic bags, bottles in the open. However, the moment Arora arrives in the park for his morning walk, he starts picking the waste one after the other and by the time he finishes six rounds of the 500-meter track, the park is free of trash. “This is part of my temperament. As a young boy, I used to keep my room clean so that I could concentrate on my studies. During my job, too, I used to make sure that all my subordinates kept the office clean as it enhanced their performance,” tells Arora. Arora said he had been following this practice ever since he shifted to Panchkula in 2010 and now it was part of his daily habit. “People are gradually becoming conscious of sanitation. When I started it in 2010, I used to find too much litter in this park, but now a very few people litter in the open,” he said.
