KK Rao, a 1996-batch IPS officer, has joined as the new Police Commissioner of Gurugram. He is widely known as encounter specialist of the Haryana Police. Within an hour of taking charge, Rao declared that he believed in strengthening the police rather than publicity. He, while chairing a meeting of police officers, demanded the pendency status and disposal of cases within a month. “We are faring well in registration of crime cases but our job doesn’t end there. We need to investigate and get the accused convicted. The cases need to be successfully disposed of as early as possible to ensure justice. So, the key concern right now will be clearing pendency and reviving investigations in dead-end cases,” Rao reportedly said.

According to sources, Rao has given 10 days to all police officials to submit pendency status reports along with the reasons for delay in disposal of each case. Rao was visibly irked over repeated reports of delay in response by the Gurugram police and declared that he would regularly make calls to the control room posing as a person in distress to check the response time.

He has also asked the city police to regulate traffic  rather than regularly setting up nakas to collect challans and publicising figures for media coverage. Policemen standing at nakas are still a common sight in Gurugram though there maybe a major traffic congestion a few metres away. The city traffic police observes Zero Tolerance Day frequently and collect lakhs of rupees as challan but they have miserably failed to regulate traffic and check illegal parking. “We need to get back to basic policing — be it the beat system, regulating traffic, patrolling or strengthening local intelligence. If we are there for people, they should feel so,” says Rao.
