Mohali, September 24

A 20-year-old student, Gurjot Singh, was caught between the wheels of a car and dragged for nearly 1 km by the vehicle at Kharar yesterday. The victim was taken to the PGI where he was declared dead by doctors.

The incident occurred near the Chappar Chiri petrol pump around 6.15 pm yesterday on the Landran-Kharar road when a Santro car (CH 03W 3253) hit the motorcycle of Gurjot Singh.

The victim, a second-year student of hotel management at the CGC, Landran, was riding the motorcycle with two of his classmates, Roshan and Kaushal, at the time of the incident. The trio was on their way to Riddhi Apartments at Shivalik City, where they were residing in a rented flat. All victims belonged to Uttar Pradesh.

After the accident, Gurjot Singh was caught between the wheels of the vehicle and dragged by the car driver for around 1 km. “Some vehicles chased the Santro car and repeatedly blew the horn in a bid to stop it, but the driver increased the speed of the car and started overtaking vehicles in a zigzag manner. It was raining at the time of the incident.

A car driver also made a video clip of the incident, which showed Gurjot being dragged by the Santro.

According to Inspector Manjit Singh, SHO of the Balongi police station, when the car hit the victims’ motorcycle from the rear side, Kaushal and Roshan fell on the left side while Gurjot came under the Santro. “Instead of stopping the car, its driver increased the speed. A severely injured Gurjot was taken to the Kharar Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the PGI, where he was declared brought dead,” said Inspector Manjit Singh.

The body of Gurjot, a resident of Channapura village in UP, was handed over to his kin after a postmortem.

Inspector Manjit Singh said the car belonged to a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh.

A case has been registered against  the unidentified driver of the car on a complaint of Kaushal at the Balongi police station. — TNS
