‘India stands for arguments’

Chandigarh: “India is known for arguments. We are seekers and not believers. There is no finality,” said Prof Aswini K Mohapatra, council member, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), and faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He was at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID) for a lecture. He talked about the dominant western intellectual tradition. He said the theoretical premise as well as analytical vocabulary employed in social science remained west-oriented.  He concluded that we needed to develop an alternative analytical framework rooted in Indian systems of thought and values with a focus on the ‘whole’ rather than fragments. In reply to a question of Prof Ashutosh Kumar, he said, “The western and Indian approaches in research cannot be complimentary. They see society in fragments but we see it as a whole.” He added, “Hinduism is not a religion but a philosophy...We have created practices like untouchability because it suited some...Misconceptions need to be addressed.” TNS
