Chandigarh, April 19
Administration of the PGI has announced the resolution of the long-standing issue of “equal work, equal pay” for outsourced workers in sanitation, catering and security services.
The resolution follows a communication from the ministry concerned regarding the CM-3641-2020-PGIMER Vs U01 & Others case, marked as CACLB. The PGI’s detailed financial analysis estimated the financial implications of providing facilities equivalent to those of the lowest-paid regular workers, amounting to approximately Rs 46 crore from October 2018 to January 2024, based on the prevailing DC rates in Chandigarh.
The approval from the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, further validates the PGI’s adherence to regulatory frameworks. With no objections raised, the institute is set to implement measures outlined in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s proposal.
Prof Vivek Lal, PGI Director, expressed satisfaction with the resolution, emphasising the institute’s commitment to equitable treatment of all workers. He stated, “At the PGI, we prioritise the well-being and fair treatment of all our workers. Our administration’s persistent and proactive intervention paved the way for this resolution.”Overall, 3,776 workers are on contract.
