Following UGC guidelines related to internship courses based on the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Panjab University is planning to appoint a nodal officer for the same from the next session.
“The multiple entry and exit options during a programme in the NEP calls for internships and vocational learning on yearly basis. A student who wishes to exit the course after one year can do so by completing internship with any government or private organisation,” said DUI Prof Rumina Sethi.
She added from the next session, both the university and affiliated colleges would have internship officers for a smooth transition to the NEP structure.
As the university implemented the new UGC-framed student-centric curriculum and credit framework for undergraduate programmes in the mid of last year, it needs to be prepared for students who might exit after completing second semester. “The framework that incorporates flexible choice-based credit system, multiple entry and exit options, and a multidisciplinary approach has so far been included in integrated science, economics and social science courses, along with those in the department of evening studies. And we need to be ready in six months before we are faced with this issue,” said Prof Sethi.
She said colleges were yet to implement this framework this year, therefore they would not face this challenge before 2025. The undergraduate internships have been classified into two categories by the UGC under the NEP — internship for enhancing employability and internship for developing research aptitude.
