The residents of Sectors 12 and 12A, 20 and 21 have a reason to cheer as the state Public Works Department (PWD) would soon construct a flyover and two foot overbridges at the cost of Rs 100 crore to facilitate the movement of traffic from either sides of the Zirakpur-Kalka National Highway number 5.

Sharing the information, Vishal Seth, technical adviser to the Haryana Government, said the government had hired the services of a consultant, GL Verma, for the purpose and came up with drawings of the project.

Seth said after elaborate study of the drawings and detailed discussions on it, the consultant was asked to add some provisions like providing a U-turn towards Zirakpur and make a provision for uninterrupted movement of traffic coming from Punjab to Himachal Pradesh and vice-versa.

The technical adviser said a draft proposal of the PWD (B&R) would be sent to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for approval. “If the NHAI accords the approval, the work on the project could start soon,” he added.

The elevated highway would be constructed between Sectors 12 and 12A on the western side and Sectors 20 and 21 on the eastern side of the city.

Seth said during the recent past, flyovers had been constructed on the highway to facilitate smooth flow of traffic but these made it inconvenient for people to travel to the sectors located on both sides of the highway. He said as there was no entry to the Sector 12-12A road, the residents of Sectors 21 and 20 had to travel 2 to 3 km more to reach home.

About two months ago, a meeting was held by local MLA Gian Chand Gupta with NHAI officials in Delhi regarding this issue, he added.

The technical adviser said two foot overbridges would be equipped with escalators.

The consultant would soon submit revised drawings. After the revised drawings are approved, a detailed project report would be framed and submitted to the government.
