Nabha, November 17

Concerned over the killing of two motorcycle-borne students in an accident recently, the administration has directed schools in this sub-division to not to allow underage students to come on two-wheelers.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Jashanpreet Kaur in a letter to about 26 government and private schools in this sub-division has directed schools heads to strictly enforce the order to avoid any further loss of life.

Due to the dense fog, two students of DAV School, Nabha, were killed and another injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with their own school van near Rohti Basta Singh village on November 13. One of the students died on the spot while the other had succumbed to his injuries at the PGI, Chandigarh, later.

Speeding was one of the major causes of fatal road accidents in the state as well as in the country and a significant number of victims were below 20 years. A couple of states have managed to successfully brought down the rising number of young causalities, but the Punjab Government was still lagging behind, said Dharam Pal Sharma, a social activist.

Confirming the same to The Tribune, the SDM said most of the underage students could be seen violating the law by driving two-wheelers which was punishable under the Motor Vehicles Act.

A copy of the order had also been forwarded to the Deputy Superintendent of Police to keep track of the students who were driving two-wheelers without any valid documents and were underage, she said.
