Four persons were killed and four critically injured in two road accidents in the city in the past 24 hours.

Two handball players were killed and four others injured after their Swift Dzire car rammed into a roadside tree near the Sector 7/26/19/27 light point after being hit by a car last night.

The victims, school-time friends, had gone to celebrate the birthday of one of them. They are national handball players and played from DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

The deceased have been identified as Surinder (22), a resident of Nayagaon, and Rajan (22), a resident of Sector 7. Sahil Sharma of Sector 19, Brijesh of Kishangarh, and Major Singh of Choti Karorn village in Mohali have been admitted to the Trauma Centre at the PGI in a critical stage.

Aman, a resident of Sector 7, Chandigarh, who was admitted to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, was driving the vehicle. Sahil (24) is a son of UT Head Constable Satish.

According to the police, they had left around 8.30 pm from their respective places to celebrate the birthday of Major at Baba Dairy in Sector 21. Around 12.15 am, the youths were heading towards Sector 7 in the car to pick their vehicles back from Aman’s house. The driver lost control after the car was hit by another car following which it rammed into a tree. Such was the impact that the tree got uprooted and the car got badly damaged.

The fire brigade had to be called to bring out the youths trapped inside the car. Cutters were used for the purpose. The victims were rushed to the GMSH, from where five of them were shifted to the PGI where two were declared brought dead. Aman is undergoing treatment at the GMSH.

Were hit by rashly driven car: injured

The injured, including driver Aman, told the police in their complaint that when they were approaching the Sector 7/26/19/27 light point, a rashly driven unidentified car came from the rear side and sped away after hitting the right side of their car. Following this, Aman lost control over the vehicle and it rammed into a tree.

A case under Sections 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

He couldn’t keep his 30-minute promise

Family members had spoken to Rajan over the phone when he told them that he would be back home in 30 minutes.

Chand, Rajan’s aunt, said he told her at 10.30 pm that he would reach in 30 minutes. Rajan was sitting on the front passenger seat of the car. He was doing MCom from the Khalsa college in Sector 26 after completing his BCom in April. He was staying in Sector 7 with his grandparents ever since the death of his father about 14 years ago. His mother lives at Faizabad in UP and has been informed about the incident. The family of deceased Surender thought he would be back soon after dinner, but that was not to be. His father, Bhagat Singh, a government employee, said Surender’s coach called him around 1 am informing him about the mishap. Surender hailed from Almora in Uttarakhand and was putting up in Nayagaon with his family. He had appeared for the BA examinations at the Khalsa college. Surender was sitting on the rear seat.
