Bathinda, July 18

Around a dozen areas in the city are facing water scarcity as one 250 horsepower motor and another 40 horsepower pump installed at Growth Centre water station are lying defunct due to some technical defect.

Lal Singh Basti, Sanguana Basti, Guru Nanakpura Mohalla, Amarpura Basti, Partap Nagar and other nearby areas have not been getting regular water supply for the last one month.

Most of the residents in the area are being provided water through water tankers by the Municipal Corporation Bathinda.

It has forced many residents to rely on groundwater for which they have installed motors.

However, the district is well-known for its contaminated groundwater.

Councillor from Ward Number 39 Gurbachan Singh Khubban yesterday raised the issue with Mayor Balwant Rai Nath who later wrote a letter to XEN Kishore Bansal.

The Mayor has asked the XEN to initiate repairs of the motors immediately.

Gurjit Singh, a city resident, said shortage of water had made this hot and humid weather almost unbearable for residents.

Senior deputy mayor Tarsem Goyal said responsibility should be fixed so that such problems don’t arise in future.

XEN, water supply and sanitation, SK Ranga said the department would get the motors checked for repairs or replacement and the needful would be done.
