Woman dies, in-laws accused of atrocities

AMRITSAR: A woman died under mysterious circumstances in Indira Colony, located on the Majitha road, here on Wednesday.

A woman died under mysterious circumstances in Indira Colony, located on the Majitha road, here on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Renu Bala. Her family members have accused her in-laws of her death.

The police have registered a case against her husband Jawahar Lal and his mother Varsha Rani in this connection. No arrest has been made so far as the accused are on the run.

Vikram, brother of the deceased, said Renu was married to Jawahar Lal in April last year. He alleged that she had been telling the family that her husband and in-laws used to harass her dowry. He said that she called him on Tuesday evening to inform that the accused had been harassing her. She urged him to take her home. A few minutes later, he received a phone call from her in-laws that Renu was admitted to a hospital, he said.

He rushed to the hospital where he came to know about her death. Accusing her in-laws of murder, he said the deceased had some strangulation marks on her neck.

Inderjit Singh, in-charge of the Majitha road bypass police post, who is investigating the case, said the exact cause of her death hadn’t been ascertained. The poliec are waiting for the postmortem examination report.

A case under Sections 304-B, 498-A and 34 of the IPC has been registered against Jawahar and his mother. No arrest has been made so far as the suspects are at large. He said the body of the deceased was handed over to the police following a postmortem examination.
