A Cuttack (Odisha) resident “fraudulently” withdrew over Rs 2.80 lakh from the account of a local resident, Parveen Kumari. A case has been registered against the accused, identified as Himanshu.

Kumari was shocked when she received a message from her bank that Rs 2.86 lakh was withdrawn from her account a few days ago. She rushed to the bank to enquire about it and later lodged a complaint with the police. An inquiry was marked to the cyber cell of the city police.

The victim, a resident of Batala road, works at a government hospital. She holds an account with a bank branch located at the Lawrence road.

During investigations, the police zeroed in on Himanshu of Cuttak. According to the police, he came to the city and stayed here for a few days before committing the fraud.

The police have got a CCTV footage in which the accused has been captured. Bank records reveal that Himanshu had approached the bank with a letter having signature of Parveen Kumari requesting the bank authorities for issuing a new cheque book. As the signature matched with that of Parveen Kumari, the bank issued a cheque book to him.

Later, the police identified the autorickshaw driver hired by Himanshu and reached the hotel located near the railway station where they checked his documents he submitted at the time of checking in. The documents include a copy of his Aadhaar card. After ascertaining the identity of the accused, the police have registered a case under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC against him. The victim told the police that she had Rs 2.95 lakh in her account, out of which the accused withdrew Rs 2.86 lakh.

The police said a team would be sent to Cuttack to arrest the accused. They said the accused also had his account in the same bank in Cuttack from where he somehow managed to get the details of the victim.
