In order to make teaching a fun-filled activity, save paper and recognition of alphabets easier for children, Janmeja Singh Johl, a writer, has come up with a unique product termed “slate”.

Johl said, “This is a new form of slate. It has been developed to make learning language easier for children.”

He said, “Children love fun filled activities, therefore instead of teaching them alphabets, I have made a slate in which kids can fill colours.”

The slate which costs mere Rs 40 is a paper with alphabets written on both sides and sandwiched between clear plastic sheets.

Instead of teaching children to start by writing, they are encouraged to colour the alphabets till they start identifying them.

“Identification of shape is important. The sooner the kids identify an alphabet, more are the chances that they will learn the language as well,” he said.

On the other side of the slate, there are ‘script’ type alphabets for children to write on it. The text can be wiped off easily and written again.

Johl has made slates for four languages, including Punjabi, Hindi, English, Urdu and for maths as well.

The idea behind making the slate is that it can be reused as many times as one wants because these are made with good quality plastic lamination sheets.

Johl said, “It is eco-friendly way of teaching because it can reused year after year and a lot of paper can be saved.”

Johl is in talks with some NGOs, to donate these slates for free in primary schools. He would also give the slates to migrants for free.
