Amritsar, March 14

An elderly couple was allegedly killed by their adopted son at Majitha town here. Though the incident apparently occurred on Saturday, it came to light when the daughter of the couple reached their house and found the couple murdered.

The couple was identified as Savinderpal Singh (65), a retired junior engineer of PSPCL, and his wife, Balbir Kaur (62). The accused was identified as Navjot Singh who has been missing after the incident. The police has registered a case against him on the statement of Mandeep Singh, the son-in-law of the deceased.

Amritsar rural police SSP Jasdeep Singh said the accused had fallen in bad company and started taking drugs. He also stole some valuables from the house before fleeing. He said raids were being conducted to arrest Navjot Singh.

Inderjit Singh, SHO, Majitha police station, said it was Navjot who had called Rupinderjit Kaur, the daughter of the couple, and told her that both Savinderpal Singh and Balbir Kaur had gone somewhere without telling anyone. Rupinderjit got suspicious and she along with her husband reached Majitha and found the main gate of the house locked. They repeatedly called up Navjot who did not pick up the phone, which later went switched off. They jumped the wall to gain entry in the house only to find the couple in a pool of blood. The accused had hit them with a heavy side table which led to their death on the spot. The entire house was ransacked.
