Amritsar, April 18

A cop has been suspended for allegedly tampering with records to destroy evidence to benefit a person, accused of robbery and criminal trespass last year.

A case against Inspector Paramjit Singh has been registered on the basis of investigation carried out by the Punjab Bureau of Investigations on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Paramjit was posted in Kathunangal at the time of incident in March 2017.

Complainant Narinder Singh Kahlon had written to senior police officials after Paramjit withdrew stringent sections from an FIR after “taking bribe from the accused” who were booked for criminal trespass, robbery and under the Arms Act on March 22, 2017. He said he had a land dispute with the suspects. On March 22, the accused entered his house and creating a ruckus by opening fire in the air and issuing threats. A case under Sections 447, 448, 452, 506, 148, 149 and 379-B of the IPC and 25, 27 of the Arms Act was registered against them.

Later, Paramjit Singh omitted Sections 379-B (robbery), 452 (criminal tresspass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and 25, 27 of the Arms Act from the FIR, the complainant stated.

The victim approached the higher authorities besides moving the High Court which directed the Punjab Bureau of Investigations to probe the allegations. During probe, the allegations were found correct and the action against Paramjit Singh was recommended for corruption.

Amritsar (Rural) SSP Parampal Singh said a case under Sections 201, 218 and 221 of the IPC and 13 (1) (D) (I) of Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the cop. He has been suspended and further probe has been ordered against him.
