Amritsar, February 21

Congress candidate for Amritsar Lok Sabha bypoll Gurjeet Singh Aujla termed Badals’ actions over Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) as ‘dirty politics’.

Aujla said the SAD and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) were two sides of the same coin as the SAD was in alliance with the INLD in Haryana and at the moment, both the parties had lost foothold in their states and were using the SYL issue to gain some ground.

He termed the INLD’s announcement to restart the construction of the canal on February 23 on the state’s border with Punjab as “Badal’s game plan” to drag the innocent masses of both the states into bloody confrontation, like the one he executed in the past to reap political gains.

“Moreover, radical organisations have also announced to gather at Kapuri to challenge INLD workers and stop them from any type of construction in Punjab,” he said. He said the Supreme Court had ordered the status quo on SYL canal and has fixed February 22 as the next date of hearing in thecase.

Aujla “appealed” to the people of Punjab and Haryana to beware of such dirty politics being played by Badals and Chautalas for their personal benefits. He also “appealed” to the Union government to keep a strict watch on the situation on the states’ borders.
