2 youths hurt in firing incident at Verka

AMRITSAR: Two youths were injured when a couple of armed, unidentified persons fired at them near Verka late last evening. The victims, identified as Varinder Singh and Sukhdeep Singh of Guru Nagar, Verka, were returning home from a health club when the armed persons fired a shot, which injured the two.

Two youths were injured when a couple of armed, unidentified persons fired at them near Verka late last evening.

The victims, identified as Varinder Singh and Sukhdeep Singh of Guru Nagar, Verka, were returning home from a health club when the armed persons fired a shot, which injured the two.

The bullet pierced through the waist of Sukhdeep Singh and hit the arm of Varinder Singh. The accused were riding a bike and fled the scene immediately after firing the shot. Critically wounded, the victims were taken to a private hospital by onlookers. Their condition is stated to be stable.

Sukhdeep Singh stated to police that he along with Varinder Singh was returning home on foot from a gym near the historic Nanaksar Gurudwara in Verka. They saw to it that the motorcycle-borne persons came parallel to them and heard a bursting noise.

They thought initially the tyre of the motorcycle had burst. However, he saw Varinder Singh bleeding from his elbow. Thereafter, he felt a severe pain in his back and when touched felt profuse bleeding. They raised the alarm and people gathered at the spot and took them to a private hospital.

Ravinderpal Singh, SHO, Verka police station, said though they had gone through the CCTV footage, due to darkness, the accused could not be identified.

The SHO said personal enmity could be one of the reasons behind the incident, but investigations were under progress to ascertain the truth. A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 34, IPC, and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against unknown persons on the statement of Sukhdeep Singh, he added.
