AMRITSAR: Nine organisations on Monday appealed to the state government to promote Punjabi language in the state. A memorandum was given to Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Subash Chander by Ramesh Yadav, head of Folklore Research Academy, and Bhupinder Singh Sandhu, Ludhiana general secretary of Punjabi Sahitya Akademi and others.

Amritsar: Nine organisations on Monday appealed to the state government to promote Punjabi language in the state. Five held for gambling

The city police have arrested five persons for gambling. One of their accomplices managed to flee. The accused have been identified as Happy Sharma of Sri Ram Avenue, Raju and Rakesh Kumar of Nehru Colony, Joginder Singh of Fateh Singh Avenue and Sandeep Singh Kalu of Tungbala road. The sixth man who fled is yet to be identified, the police said. Rs 12,000 has been seized. In another incident, the police nabbed Pawan Kumar of Lahori Gate on similar charges. TNS

Quiz contest organised

Amritsar: The department of geography and tourism of BBK DAV College for Women organised an inter-college zonal geography quiz (Amritsar zone) in collaboration with the Association of Punjab Geographers (APG). Teams of BBK DAV College for Women, Hindu College and SR Government College participated in the quiz. BBK DAV College for Women secured the first position, Hindu College second and SR Government College stood third. A seminar on ‘urban planning and geographical information system’ was also organised. Meet on safe transportation

DAV Public School held a meeting with the van and auto-rickshaw drivers regarding safe, efficient and reliable transportation services for its students. The meeting was presided over by Principal Neera Sharma. Members of the transport committee and faculty members were present. Sharma made drivers aware of the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on safe transportation of school children besides throwing light on importance of traffic norms. TNS

Youth killed in mishap

Hoshiarpur: Gaurabh, an 18-year-old student of Class XII, was killed and his friend Pankaj was seriously injured in an accident at Nainwa village in Garhshankar, Hoshiarpur, on Monday. The mishap took place when the two were on their way to attend a marriage party. Gaurabh, a resident of Mahindwani village, along with Pankaj of Mazara Dhingarian, was going to attend the party in a car borrowed from a friend. Onlookers said they were coming at a high speed near the village. Suddenly, the car went out of control and collided with the boundary wall of a farm. The police have registered a case. OC

Hike in pension sought

Jalandhar: Pensioners of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sagathan (KVS) held a meeting here to discuss the injustice being done to them by denying the benefits of the Seventh Pay Commission. As many as 30 retired KVS employees prepared a charter of demands and sent it to the Commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sagathan, New Delhi. They expressed their disillusionment at the callous attitude of the KVS and the government towards their demands. They said despite consistent efforts of the All India Retired Employees Welfare Society, led by Jagat Singh and Chander Mohan Dubey, no action was taken in this regard even after two years. They also pledged solidarity with the All India KVS Retired Welfare Society that planned to carry forward the movement. One of the employees said several letters had already been sent the PMO and the HRD ministry but to no avail. TNS
