Trouble brews for civic officials

The Municipal Corporation has asked Superintending Engineer (Electrical) SP Singh and Executive Engineer Balwinder Singh to explain why metal halide (MH) lamps were replaced with mercury vapour lamps on several roads in the city.

Snatching turns out to be a story 
Ludhiana, November 29
The sensational Rs 7 lakh snatching at Dhandra Road on November 20 turned out to be a concocted story. After being booked by the city police, the accused, identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Dhandra Road, told the police that he was duped by five persons of Rs 10 lakh.

HC order cheers advocate 
Ludhiana, November 29
Advocate Harjot Singh Harika said he had paid the price for raising his voice against corrupt practices prevailing in the District Courts Complex. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has restored his right to contest the Bar elections. While lauding the judgement of Justice K Kannan, Harjot Singh Harika said: “The judgement has restored my faith in the judiciary.”

Picture is not rosy in Ward No. 1. Potholed roads and choked sewerage speaks volumes of the apathy of the civic authorities. Development works have been put on hold for want of funds. Area councillor Randhir Singh Sibia said he had not received funds for the past one-and-a-half years.

One more patient from district has tested positive for dengue. The patient, a 30-year-old man from Chander Nagar, is undergoing treatment at DMCH. With this, the total number of patients diagnosed with dengue in Ludhiana hospitals has reached 232.

Directors of Hope Trust, a rehab based in Hyderabad, talk to mediapersons in Ludhiana. Hope Trust, an internationally acclaimed rehabilitation centre based in Hyderabad, is touring Punjab to spread awareness about proper treatment methodologies. Talking to the media, Trust directors Rahul Luther and Rajeshwari Luther said the team was interacting with doctors, psychiatrists, counselors and social workers besides visiting rehabilitation centres in the state.

Students’ enrichment programme
Ludhiana: A students' enrichment programme was organised at Partap Public School, Ludhiana. Spread over three days, the enrichment programme provided rich and varied exposure to thes tudents through many inter-house competitions, including Hindi poetry recitation, Hindi extempore, wall magazine contest, Punjabi poetry recitation, joke enactment, face painting, English poetry recitation and collage making. The contests were held at three layers- intra class, inter class and inter house for students of classes VI to XII. 

Agriculturalists vow to adopt dairy farming

Farmers in the area have vowed to adopt dairy farming as an organised profession to supplement their regular income. They took the oath in response to an appeal made by the Department of Dairy Development officials during a camp at Barundi village near here today.

The gated Rajguru Nagar colony in Ludhiana. Even as vast majority of the residents of posh locality of Rajguru Nagar in the city, developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), are turning against the installation of seven illegal gates on public roads and streets, which remain closed all through the day, another section of the residents seems to be bent upon open confrontation with the authorities on the issue.

NGO envisages a smoke-free Ludhiana

The Generation Saviour Association, an NGO, has initiated a smoke-free Ludhiana campaign in the district. The NGO will press upon government offices to implement the Cigarette and Tobacco Product Control (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. In its first phase, the NGO will focus only on smoking. Amiteshwar Kaur, president of the NGO, said with the support of the Tobacco Control Cell, Punjab, they had completed the campaign in 18 districts out of the 22 districts of the state. By now, only four districts of Ludhiana, Moga, Tarn Taran and Pathankot are left.
It would take the help of the District Tobacco Control Societies to make the district smoke-free.

63 vehicles challaned 
Ludhiana, November 29
As many as 63 vehicle drivers were challaned during a special naka set up by the district administration and the police near Phullanwal village in the Pakhowal Road area last evening.

Art Carnival 2014 has about 40 artists that are showcasing their artworks. About hundred works of art in different media, on myriad themes comprise the exhibition being organised by the TAC Art Gallery in association with the Ishmeet Singh Music Institute at the institute. The works include paintings, sketches, sculpture and photography works of the artists that include students, amateur artists as well as accomplished artists.

Three of thieves’ gang held
Jagraon, November 29
The Jagraon police have arrested three members of a gang allegedly involved in various theft incidents that took place in the area in the recent past. They were nabbed by a Bhundri police chowki team outside Valipur Kalan village near Sidhwan Bet, following a tip-off yesterday evening.

Man run over by train
Ludhiana, November 29
A middle aged man died after being hit by a train here today. The incident took place this morning near Gill village here today. Government Railway Police officials said they received the information in the morning following which a police party reached the spot and recovered the body of the victim, who could not be identified yet.
