In J-K, Modi avoids Art 370, attacks ‘dynastic’ politics

Kishtwar, November 22
Without touching upon Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sought a decisive mandate from the people promising to rid the state of “dynastic” politics to “usher a new era of peace and progress”.

Kick-starting the BJP’s election campaign from Kishtwar today by addressing a joint rally in support of six party candidates of the erstwhile Doda district, Modi launched a blistering attack on two regional parties for “having an understanding to plunder J-K”.

In his first election rally in the poll-bound state, Modi also invoked Atal Bihari Vajpayee and promised to fulfil his dreams. At a public meeting in Chougan Kishtwar, Modi started his address by reminding the people that he had visited J-K in July, August, September, October and now in November.

“I came here several times in recent months as J-K is very close to my heart. I come here to carry forward the initiatives taken by Vajpayee. I will follow the path of insaniyat (humanity), zhamuriyat (democracy) and Kashmiriyat (composite culture),” he said.

“I want to end sufferings of the people of the state. I will accelerate developmental activities which remained neglected in the past 50 years,” Modi said.

Talking of backwardness and under-development in Jammu and Kashmir, he said dynastic politics had doomed the destiny of the people of the state.

Without naming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC), he said it was high time to get rid of dynastic politics. “Can only two families rule Jammu and Kashmir? It seems that these families have an understanding. One will rule for five years then the other takes over. There is five-year contract between the two families for looting Kashmir,” he said.

Citing example of Haryana where the BJP formed the government after the recently held Assembly elections, Modi said: “Like Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir should also end years of misrule by two families.”

The PM also talked of corruption in the state and said the present regime had crossed all limits. “The ruling party has already looted the state and the other proponent of dynastic politics is waiting for beginning its new innings to do the same,” he said in a veiled attack on the NC and the PDP.

Modi said he would address the grievances of all 12 lakh refugees. “Some people are spreading canards about refugees’ issue, but I promise that we will solve their problems,” he said.

BJP all out to woo Muslims

To counter the anti-BJP campaign launched by the Congress and the PDP in the state, the saffron party on Saturday went all out to woo the Muslim voters of the Doda belt. While BJP candidate from Banihal Shoukat Daing raked up the issue of the Babri Masjid demolition and hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the BJP also gave importance to local Muslim leaders of Kishtwar to felicitate Modi.
