More trouble for sect head as police slap fresh
murder charges

Barwala (Hisar), November 20
A day after his arrest, charges of murder were slapped against Rampal and others in connection with the deaths of five women followers and a child in Satlok Ashram. The police registered two separate cases under Sections 343 (wrongful confinement), 302 (murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) on complaints of relatives of two of the six victims who died at the ashram.

The complainants include Shivpal, a resident of Delhi and Suresh of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh. Shivpal's wife Sarita and Suresh's wife Rajni and Santosh, Malkiat High Court following his arrest. A formal application was also filed in the open Kaur, Rajbala and one-and-a-half-year-old Adrash were among those who were brought dead at Agroha Medical Hospital from Satlok Ashram yesterday.

Besides Rampal, the other accused include his close aides Rajender, Mohinder, Raj Kapoor and some unknown persons.

Inspector Sumit Kumar, who is investigating the case, said the viscera had been sent to the forensic laboratory at Madhuban as the cause of death was not clear in the post-mortem report.

The bodies bore no injury marks, he said. The police vacated Satlok Ashram today and launched a search operation at on ashram premises spread over 12 acres on the outskirts of Barwala.

The ashram has a capacity to accommodate around 50,000 persons. Contrary to the reports that the ashram had run out of essential commodities such as water and food, a huge quantity of ration, vegetables and cooking material were stocked in the ashram's kitchen spread over an acre. Three underground water tanks were full to capacity.

Rampal's five-storeyed house at the far end of the ashram has all facilities, including a swimming pool on the ground floor, besides an elevator.

There are 30 split ACs installed in the house and even the bathrooms are air-conditioned.

The house also has exotic furniture. Apart from the Rampal's private accommodation at the third storey, every floor has CCTVs cameras and a sound system.

5-day remand in sedition case

  • Rampal was presented before the Hisar Duty Magistrate Priyanka Jain around 10 pm on Thursday
  • The Duty Magistrate remanded him to five-day police custody on charges of sedition and waging a war against the state
  • His nine associates have been remanded to three- day custody
  • The police booked 11 of his accomplices under the IPC and Arms Act.
