Mumbai, November 12
The Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra today won the trust motion through a voice vote, drawing angry reactions from the Opposition Shiv Sena and the Congress.

The Opposition accused the ruling BJP of failing to prove its majority and “strangulating democracy”.

Speaker Haribhau Bagade, who was elected unopposed earlier in the day, declared a one-line motion moved by BJP MLA Ashish Shelar passed as the Treasury Benches said “Aye”. This triggered a wave of protests by Sena and Congress MLAs, who rushed to the Well of the House. Legislators of the NCP sat quietly indicating their abstention from the voting process.

The Opposition insisted Fadnavis had failed to prove his majority in the Assembly. “It is a black day for democratic process in Maharashtra. Never has a confidence motion been passed by voice vote. Until the government proves its majority in the House by division, the government is illegitimate,” said former cm Prithviraj Chavan.

Congress MLAs later came out and staged a protest outside the Assembly. They said they would register their protest with Governor Vidyasagar Rao.

Sena’s Legislature Party leader Eknath Shinde, who was appointed the Leader of the Opposition after his party formally decided to occupy the main Opposition’s space in the Assembly, said: “The House should be run according to the rules and the Constitution should not be trampled upon. The new government is strangulating democracy. We sought division but the trust vote was passed by voice vote.”

Both the Congress and the Sena want the government to undergo a fresh vote of confidence. Defending his decision to allow voice vote, Bagade told mediapersons he was only exercising his discretion. “I was only exercising my prerogative as Speaker,” said Bagade. Earlier, Sena’s Vijay Auti and Congress’ Varsha Gaikwad, who had filed nominations for the post of Speaker, withdrew their nominations allowing Bagde to win unopposed. (With agency inputs)
