Made-at-home schools
Many parents are opting for homeschooling, as it promises a learning experience in a stress-free environment
Vibha Sharma

Schooling routine begins early for children these days, almost as soon as they are out of their cradle. Queues for the admissions outside the prestigious schools across the country keep getting longer every year. Anxious parents find the succour only when they pay a handsome amount as school fees to the school where their children as young as two years, are ensured admission. Expectations of parents from schools soar sky high when their ward(s) secure the coveted seat in pre-primary.

'ART & SOUL
Books as lines of life
Works of art featuring love for books and joys of reading have come down from the Mughal period

T
HE season of literary festivals in India is upon us again, and it seems appropriate somehow to speak of books and of the joys of reading at this time. For the festivals are everywhere now: Jaipur, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bhopal, Kasauli, even Bhutan. Everywhere, excerpts from books will be read; themes touched upon in them will be discussed; pleasure will be shared; arguments will ensue. But the focus will, pleasantly so, remain on the printed, or scripted, word.

For a fit pregnancy
Contrary to the popular belief, a workout regimen during pregnancy can be beneficial for the mother. But check with your doctor first
Nawaz Modi Singhania
over and over again, we've seen women look just as good, if not better, after childbirth. If you put in the effort, it can be done. By working out diligently and safely, improving eating habits, increasing rest, eliminating bad habits and receiving adequate prenatal care, a pregnant woman can become healthier than ever before.

When puberty strikes early
Early onset of menses, especially before the age of nine, has been linked to anaemia, increased risk of breast cancer, irritability, loss of school days and negative impact on school performance
Dr Umesh N. Jindal
Menarche or onset of menstruation is an important developmental milestone in a girl's life. It heralds the sexual maturity from the medical as well as the social point of view. Menarche usually occurs between 12-16 years of age. When menarche occurs before the age of 12 years it is called early menarche.

SOCIETY
Friends forever
Women have always bonded and formed deep relationships with other women. This friendship comes with a basic understanding of shared problems
Aditi Garg
If Sex and The City gave the world an unfettered view of a circle of women friends, Queen shows Kangana Ranaut and Lisa Haydon having an unabashedly wonderful time together. Women share an instant connection and easy camaraderie that has been shadowed by numerous idiot box depictions that portray them only as being pitted against each other.

TRAVEL
The changing face of Lhasa
Native Tibetans, devout and deeply spiritual, seem to be the only constant in a rapidly transforming Lhasa as it joins the countless number of ‘modern’ cities with its glittering malls, soaring metal cranes and speeding SUVs
Sudha Mahalingam
The flagpoles groan under the weight of hundreds of yards of fabric — all rainbow-hued prayer flags — draped around them by devotees. The flagstones in front of the temple wear a glossy sheen, polished by the repeated prostrations of countless worshippers.

Polo, the way jumbo wants
Pachyderms were the real heroes at the recent 13th elephant polo tournament. As many as 16 teams and 50 jumbos entertained more than 2,000 persons
Mandeep Puri
Elephants no more remain the animals meant only for rides or amusements. Nowadays, they have started playing polo too. Thailand played a perfect host to 50 elephants at the 13th annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament. As many as 16 teams with players from around the globe participated awarding some forgettable moments at VR Sports Club in Bangkok.

ENTERTAINMENT
The Kashmir story retold
The release and successful run of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, the most controversial film of 2014, shows that like audiences, the political establishment can be tolerant, if it wants to be
Lada Guruden Singh
As Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, one of filmmaker’s best works and certainly most political yet, gets ready for its international festival circuit tour having ended its run at the boxoffice in India, its peaceful release and screening across the country reiterates the fact that Indian DNA is largely accepting and tolerant.

One of his kind
In his films, Robert Altman wove an absorbing drama of life’s foibles with delicious irony and tongue-in-cheek responses
Ervell E. Menezes
Robert Altman — the name itself conjures images of yesteryear because it was he who carved a special niche as "one of the world’s greatest and most influential directors in film history." This maverick filmmaker, who died at 80, was also Hollywood’s most non-conformist artiste and his vast body of work gives ample evidence of this.
