Exit polls project BJP as largest party in Haryana

Chandigarh, October 15
The BJP appears to be emerging as the single-largest party in Haryana. It may be in a position to form the next government on its own after the results are declared on October 19.

All exit polls and individual assessments by politicians from across the board suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charm may have worked for the BJP in the Jat land.

Reacting to assessments, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said in Rohtak today: "Exit polls are invariably wrong and the Congress was confident of forming the government for the third time in the state."

Congress leader Manishankar Iyer said the party high command was hopeful that the Congress was "still in a neck and neck position to form the government," even as most exit polls put the Congress at the third slot, behind the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

The exit polls put the BJP way ahead of others and even indicate that the saffron party may be in a position to form the government on its own.

The INLD, whose chief Om Prakash Chautala claimed during campaigning that he would take oath as the CM from Tihar Jail, has been placed second. As per the exit polls, the INLD will have to remain satisfied with the largest opposition in the 90-member Haryana Vidhan Sabha.

The exit poll by Panchari, which got the figures in the April 2014 Parliamentary elections right by predicating the exact number of seats for the BJP, has again put the saffron party in the lead where it would be able to form the government on its own by being way ahead of the halfway mark. Panchari is giving an outright majority to the BJP with 52 seats. It is giving the INLD 23 seats and the Congress 10. This exit poll is giving five seats to others.

The survey by ABP-Nielsen has also indicated that the BJP will form the government with a majority. It has given 46 seats to the BJP, 29 to INLD, 10 to Congress, two to HJC and three to others.

The Times Now C-voter exit poll has indicated a hung assembly. It has put the BJP ahead of others with 37 seats, INLD at number two with 28 seats, Congress 15 and all others put together getting 10. The Congress has had two consecutive terms in the state and is facing an anti-incumbency which Hooda says is "pro-incumbency" on account of the development in the state during the last decade. The satta bazaar has given highest number of seats to the BJP between 39 and 41, INLD between 27 and 29, Congress between 15 and 17 and the HJC between three and five.
