We have responded with courage to ceasefire
violations: PM Modi
BARAMATI (Maharashtra): Under fire from the Opposition over escalating ceasefire violations by Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India has responded to the aggression with courage and lamented public debate on the issue for political gains.
"Today when bullets are being fired on the border, it is the enemy that is screaming. Our jawans have responded to the aggression with courage," Modi said at an election rally at Baramati, the turf of NCP chief and former Defence Minister Sharad Pawar.
"The enemy has realised that times have changed and their old habits will not be tolerated," he said.
He slammed those targeting the government on the issue through a public discourse, saying it demoralised the jawans fighting on the border.
"Such an issue should not be part of a political debate...
"Elections will come and go, governments will come and go, but please don't demoralise those fighting on the border by debating these things for political gains," he said.
"People know my intentions and I need not express those in words. Where the jawans have to speak, they speak with their finger on the trigger ... and they will continue to speak that way," he said.
Targeting Pawar, who had criticised him for holding poll rallies in Maharashtra when there was tension on the border, Modi said, "When you were the Defence Minister, there were problems with Pakistan and China on the border. Did you ever bother to go to the border then?"
"There have been terror strikes in Maharashtra during your tenure ... Mumbai, Malegaon, Pune. You could not even reach the terrorists, leave alone catching them. In the spirit of patriotism, we never politicised the issue," he said. — PTI
Pakistan must stop unprovoked firing: Jaitley
NEW DELHI: Pakistan must stop unprovoked firing and shelling on the border in Jammu and Kashmir, said Defence Minister Arun Jaitley who warned "our forces will make the cost of this adventurism unaffordable".
"Pakistan has to stop this unprovoked firing and shelling...as long as it continues how can there be peace," Jaitley asked Thursday while speaking to the media here.
"If Pakistan persists with this adventurism, our forces will make the cost of this adventurism unaffordable," he added.
Seven civilians have been killed so far in Pakistani firing in civilian areas close to the border since October 6. A total of 60 people have been injured, including five who were injured Wednesday night.
Jaitley said that Pakistan was clearly the aggressor in the recent attacks and that the ceasefire violations were "an effort by Pakistan to precipitate tensions where none exist" and "to provide a cover for infiltration".
Over 20,000 people from the border villages have abandoned their homes to avoid being targeted by Pakistani shelling of civilian habitations in Jammu, Samba and Kathua
districts.-IANS
Congress calls Modi an 'absentee Prime Minister'
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “absence” in Delhi and his engagement in state election campaigns at a time when unabated ceasefire violations continued from across the border.
The party also hit back at Defence Minister Arun Jaitley for his statement that
Opposition’s criticism was “ill-informed”, saying that they had not been taken into confidence over the matter and that it was the Prime Minister and his government that were acting “irresponsibly” on the issue.
Calling the Prime Minister a “control freak”, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said, “When we have such a serious issue at our borders, we should not have an absentee Prime Minister.”
“Prime Minister is a control freak. He wants to be everywhere ...
whether by design or default the Prime Minister has been absent during crucial period. He has been busy pretending to be Chief Minister face for every state be it Maharashtra or
Haryana,” Sharma told reporters in New Delhi.
Ruing that a statement from the Defence Minister too came very late, Sharma said, “It is good that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who holds the additional charge of defence ministry, has finally
spoken ... for days there was neither the Prime Minister nor the Sefence
Minister in the sight. India cannot choose to have a part-time Defence
Minister.”
Questioning as to why the country still did not have a full-time Defence
Minister, Sharma said, “BJP’s Prime Minister has done something that
none of his predecessors has done”.
It is a matter of concern that India does not have a full-time Defence
Minister even though the new government is in place for five months.”
Attacking the Prime Minister for not taking the Opposition into confidence over the issue, he asked, “Did the Prime Minister have the basic courtesy to call the leaders of principal Opposition party of both Houses to discuss it?
“The Prime Minister did not take the country or the Opposition parties into confidence whether it was the issue of China or Pakistan. It was expected that he should have shown maturity and seriousness and called leaders of principal Opposition parties and discussed the issue,”
Sharma said.
Sharma further attacked the Prime Minister for having still not appointed a special representative to resolve border issues with China after the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the country.
He alleged that the country has “not seen any clarity or vision” from the Prime Minister on diplomacy and foreign affairs.
The Congress spokesperson said every possible effort should be made to stop the ceasefire violations and there is a need to tell Pakistan in unequivocal terms that Indian response to provocations of Pakistan will be firm.
Cautioning Pakistan to “avoid armed conflict with India”, he said the recent actions of the neighbouring country like firing into the Indian territory will “further besmirch” Pakistan’s image.
“The firing has to stop. There has to be ceasefire. Only then diplomacy can be
initiated ... it is better that firing stops and diplomacy begins,” he said. — PTI
India, Pak trade heavy fire along IB
JAMMU: India and Pakistan traded heavy mortar and gun fire along the international border with Pakistani troops targeting 60 outposts and 90 villagers overnight in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, leaving eight persons, including three BSF jawans, injured.
Pakistan Rangers shelled almost the entire 192-km border during the night. Nearly 30,000 people have been displaced following one of the worst violations of the 2003 ceasefire by Pakistan which has left eight people dead and 80 others, including nine security men, injured since October 1.
"Pakistani Rangers continued with unprovoked mortar shelling and heavy automatic weapon firing on BSF posts all along International Border (IB) since 2045 hours last night", a BSF spokesman said
on Thursday.
"Almost the whole stretch of International Border in Samba, Hiranagar, Ramgarh, Arnia, R S Pura, Kanachak and Pargwal (Sub-sectors) was affected in the firing," he said.
"About 60 BSF border outposts were affected by the fire from Pakistan side," the spokesman said, adding BSF troops retaliated in a "calibrated manner".
Firing exchanges were continuing till this morning in Pargwal, Kanachak, Arnia and Samba sub-sectors.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said the defence forces were giving a "befitting" reply to the Pakistani onslaught and the country will not bow down before anyone.
"I want to assure the people that we will not let down our country," he said, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that "everything will be fine soon" on Pakistan border.
"The Prime Minister is keeping a close eye on the situation. He does not need to speak as our Army and BSF personnel are giving a befitting response and we are satisfied with it," Singh said amid questions being raised by the Opposition on government's reponse to the ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
According to officials, over 90 border villages have been hit by mortar shelling and firing by Pakistan since last night. While 57 hamlets were hit in Kathua district, others have been targeted in Jammu and Samba districts.
Vadra land deal: Congress seeks apology from Modi
NEW DELHI: Congress today stepped up attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an "apology" from him as Election Commission ruled that there was no violation of model code of conduct by the Haryana Government in clearing the land deal involving Robert
Vadra.
Party spokesperson Anand Sharma alleged that Modi was "embarrassing" the position of the Prime Minister by repeatedly making "false allegations" and he should stop doing it.
"BJP has egg on its face after the EC's order. Narendra Modi, being the Prime Minister of the country, gave a very irresponsible statement and made allegations against Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Will the Prime Minister now seek apology from the Chief Minister and people of Haryana for making wrong statements," Sharma told reporters here.
Maintaining that it "belittles" the high post if somebody in the seat of Prime Minister keeps making false allegations, the Congress spokesperson said, "Modi should apologise to Haryana Chief Minister."
Alleging that Modi continues with his "shoot and scoot policy" as he was doing as an Opposition leader, Sharma said, "it does not behove a Prime Minister to be caught repeatedly making false statements...It is a matter of concern if the Prime Minister of India has this mentality".
Election Commission had last night ruled that there appears to be no violation of the model code of conduct by Haryana government in clearing the land deal between Sonia Gandhi's son-in law Robert Vadra and real estate major
DLF.
Haryana government's validation of the mutation of the land sold by a company owned by Vadra to DLF had sparked a row in the run up to the state Assembly poll.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Monday asked EC to take a serious note of Hooda government clearing the land deal between Vadra and DLF, alleging it was done hastily as ruling Congress faced "certain defeat" in the Assembly polls. The model code of conduct for the October 15 Assembly elections in Haryana came into force on September 12 when the poll process was announced. Congress was maintaining that it can be an issue of violation of model code of conduct as the decision by the state government was taken much earlier.
Party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed also took a dig at Modi tweeting, "EC observes no code violation. This clearly indicates PM Modi in his poll meetings not only trying to fool people but the EC as well".
Soon after the EC's decision late last night, AICC Communication Department Chairman Ajay Maken had accused the Prime Minister of "cheap gimmickry" and "misleading" the nation and EC over the land deal. -PTI
HC disqualifies 5 HJC MLAs who joined Congress in 2009
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court today set aside the order of Haryana Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma accepting the "merger" of five members of Haryana Janhit Congress (BL) into Congress in 2009, terming it as "hasty" and "bad in law".
In his 57-page verdict, Justice K. Kannan, while allowing the writ petition filed by HJC chief Kuldeep Bishnoi, held that the five legislators stand disqualified but added that any decisions taken by them till the pronouncement of judgement shall not be rendered invalid.
The High Court said there was no proof of merger of the original political party and that the decision was against constitutional mandate. It said the decision of the Speaker was sans basis and without undertaking the minimum collection of data regarding the decision of the original party.
The Congress had failed to get the required majority of 45 in the 90-member state
Assembly in the 2009 Assembly polls, but Bhupinder Singh Hooda managed to form the government after five Haryana Janhit Congress (BL) MLAs deserted their party and merged with the Congress, which also got the support of seven Independents and a lone BSP member.
The five HJC (BL) MLAs — Satpal Sangwan, Vinod Bhayana, Rao Narender Singh, Zile Ram Chochra and Dharam Singh Chhokar
— had "merged" the party with the Congress.
HJC chief Kuldeep Bishnoi, who was the lone party MLA left, had challenged the order of Speaker of Haryana Assembly passed on January 13, 2013, whereby he had rejected his application regarding disqualification of the five MLAs of HJC.
Justice Kannan held that these MLAs are also disqualified to hold any remunerative political post for duration of the period commencing from the respective dates of voluntarily giving up their membership from the party, i.e., November 9, 2009.
"However, any actions performed or decisions taken, while already occupying such remunerative political posts till the time of pronouncement of judgement shall not be rendered invalid," held the court.
The decision has come ahead of October 15 Haryana Assembly election.
The Bench, however, observed that the decision of the Speaker cannot be termed as malafide one.
With regard to the plea raised by the petitioner that the Speaker should have resigned from the original political party after his election to the office of Speaker, the Judge held that there was no such compulsion under the Constitution.
"Even the Chief Election Commissioner has himself not recognised the merger of HJC (BL) with Congress," it observed.
The High Court had earlier reserved its verdict on the plea challenging the constitutional validity of the merger of five MLAs from HJC into the Congress.
Kuldeep Bishnoi had fought a legal battle for five years after five MLAs who were elected on his party ticket switched over to the
Congress which had fallen short of majority on its own after the October 2009
Assembly poll.
The HJC had won six seats and five of his MLAs decided to "merge" their party with
the Congress, which was six short of absolute majority in the 90-member House. — PTI

Omar Abdullah denies he complained against movie 'Haider'
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has denied news reports about his complaint against Vishal Bhardwaj's "Haider", saying he had not even watched the movie yet.
Reacting sharply to a news report carried by a news portal that said the chief minister had complained to Bollywood film maker Vishal Bhardwaj over the film's depiction of Kashmir, Omar wrote on his Twitter site, "So this website has to be awarded for the most amazing work of fiction I have seen in a very long time." First official report on MH370 flight says flight spiraled
into sea after fuel ran out
WELLINGTON: An official report mapping the final hours of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has revealed that the plane went into a shallow left turn at 35,000 feet above the Indian Ocean before rapidly spiraling down into the sea after its fuel ran out.
The Australian Transportation Safety Board (ATSB), which is coordinating the search operation to locate the wreckage of the missing flight in the Indian Ocean, concluded that the right-hand engine of the Boeing 777 aircraft was likely to have cut out first after its fuel ran out and the left engine stopped seconds later, reported Stuff.co.nz.
The report is the first official account of the last minutes of the aircraft and is based on flight simulations that recreated its final moments.
Although, investigators have refused to speculate the fate of the missing plane but the latest report was based on the assumption that the flight flew on autopilot hours before it ran out of fuel and went down into the ocean.
Flight MH370 has been missing since the early hours of March 8, when it left Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board. –Agencies
BJP launches campaign aimed at 'Mission 60 plus' in Haryana
CHANDIGARH: The BJP which is eyeing a majority government in Haryana has launched a high-pitched poll campaign by pressing its top leadership into campaigning to realise its target of "Mission 60 plus" seats in the
state.
While Prime Minister Modi during his three visits has already addressed eight public meetings covering various parts of the Congress-ruled State, a number of other top BJP leaders have also been involved in the campaign.
Those who have been campaigning in the State include BJP President Amit Shah, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, Piyush Goyal, Rao Inderjit Singh, Chief Ministers of some BJP ruled states including Shivraj Singh Chouhan, besides Navjot Singh Sidhu and other leaders.
In the past, the saffron party that was restricted to playing second fiddle to Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the then Bansi Lal led Haryana Vikas Party (later merged with Congress), is for the first time contesting from all the 90 assembly seats on its own.
From having six legislators in 2000, two in 2005 and just four in 2009, BJP is hoping to wrest power from the Congress, which has been in power in the state for the past two consecutive terms.
"People gave us overwhelming support in the Lok Sabha polls. They are fed up with the Congress rule in the state, which has taken Haryana backward with corruption, land scams, poor law and order, unemployment and lopsided development.
"These have been the main achievements of the Hooda government," BJP spokesman and party candidate from Narnaund assembly segment, Capt Abhimanyu said.
He said the BJP will form the next government in the State "with a comfortable majority".
BJP's best electoral performance in the state so far has been winning 16 seats out of the 20 contested by the party in 1987, when Devi Lal-led INLD had swept to power.
However, in 1991, BJP again went down, managing to win just two seats. In 1996, the party went on to win 11 seats.
The challenge for the BJP in Haryana has been to find a leader who would match former Deputy Chief Minister Dr Mangal Sain's aura.
Even for the October 15 polls, the BJP is fighting the polls under the leadership of Narendra Modi and has not named any Chief Ministerial candidate.
Before the polls, a number of leaders from other parties including the Congress and INLD joined the BJP in Haryana.
The list also included Birender Singh who snapped his 42-year-old ties with the Congress.
Birender Singh, a prominent leader who belongs to the predominant Jat community and has on past several occasions made his Chief Ministerial aspirations public, failed to get a ticket from the saffron party.
The party has also attempted to break away from its non-Jat urban identity by accommodating many Jat candidates in the first list of candidates.
As the party fancies to capture power, BJP did not agree to its erstwhile ally Haryana Janhit Congress' demand of sparing 45 seats for the junior partner, which failed to win its two Lok Sabha seats it contested this year.
Ultimately, Kuldeep Bishnoi led HJC decided to walk away, with the party chief recently snapping ties with the BJP alleging "repeated betrayal" by the saffron party.
To bolster its poll prospects, the BJP has already covered all 90 assembly segments by way of four Vijay Sankalp Yatras.
However, ruling Congress claims that BJP's dream of capturing power in Haryana will never be realised.
"Their 'achhe din' myth stands exposed and the artificially created bubble has burst," said Haryana Cabinet Minister and senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.
The people will once again bring back Congress on the basis of development work which the ruling outfit has carried out in the State, he said. -PTI
Army promotes cricket in Kashmir
JAMMU: The border tensions notwithstanding, the Indian Army is organising a cricket tournament to promote budding cricketers from "far flung areas" in Jammu and Kashmir.
A total of six teams were taking part in the Rashtriya Rifles Big Bash (RRBB) Intra Village Cricket Tournament in Jammu region, a statement from the military said Thursday.
The teams have been drawn from the Naushera sub-division. The game will be played on 20:20 league-cum-knockout basis.
"The tournament has witnessed an overwhelming response and has turned out to be a crowd puller," the statement said.
"The youth and locals of the area were extremely happy since it also diverted their attention from the devastation caused by the floods... With reputation at stake, each team put in their best." -IANS
Modi to address rally in Jind on Oct 11
JIND: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing a rally in Jind district of Haryana on October 11 ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.
This is the first time Modi would be addressing a rally twice in the same Lok Sabha constituency. Yesterday, Modi had held a rally in Sonepat.
Surendra Barwala, who joined BJP after leaving INLD, is contesting from Jind on a BJP ticket. Barwala was a two-time MP from Hisar and state Education minister during the INLD-government.
BJP has never emerged victorious in Jind which is considered to be a stronghold of INLD where it currently holds all the five assembly seats. -PTI
Dhoni backs his mediocre bowlers, says they did a decent job
KOCHI: Barring Bhuvneshwar Kumar all the Indian bowlers leaked runs in the first ODI against West Indies, but home team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has backed his underfire bowling attack despite crashing to an embarrassing 124-run loss in the series opener here.
India paid the price for some mediocre bowling as the Caribbeans, who were on the verge of boycotting the ODI, rode on Marlon Samuels' career-best equalling 126 not out to post a mammoth 321 for six at the Nehru Stadium yesterday.
But Dhoni refused to put the blame on his bowlers, saying they did a "decent job".
"What we have to evaluate is how the wicket was? I felt that it was a very good wicket to bat on. There was not much turn. Leaving aside Bhuvneshwar, most of our bowlers gave away runs. Considering this a total of 320 on this wicket, I feel our bowlers did a decent job," the skipper said.
"I was quite happy with the death bowling. Our bowlers bowled quite consistently at the death. They maintained their lengths and we were able to put fielders in right areas.
Overall, I am quite happy with the bowling," Dhoni said.
"We bowled really well in the death overs. The ground is not very big, so 320-325 is a par score on wicket like this." Medium pacer Bhuvneshwar was the most economical bowler for India yesterday, conceding just 38 runs off his 10 overs but failed to pick up any wicket.
If India's bowling was mediocre, their batting display can be turned as shoddy as the West Indies bundled out the hosts for just 197 runs in 41 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Asked Dhoni about India's batting performance, he said lack of partnerships and losing quick wickets rattled their chase.
"We needed a good start to chase that score. We started off really well but after the run out of Ajinkya (Rahane) we could not stop losing wickets," he said.
"While chasing 320 if you keep losing wickets in quick succession, it becomes difficult for the batsmen. We lost too many wickets in close succession. It was important to get partnerships going."
West Indies started the series as underdogs but the Indian skipper said he was not at all surprised by the performance of the Caribbeans in the first ODI.
"I think they batted really well. They have a fantastic ODI squad. They can bat till nine and they have got proper five bowlers besides a strong bench strength. All of them were quite experienced in bowling in death overs. They bowled consistently in the same areas. They have got the right kind of players," Dhoni said.
Asked to analyse the reason behind India's embarrassing defeat, Dhoni said: "They batted really well. We could not get too many wickets with the new ball.
"They were hitting the big shots. We couldn't put pressure on them and gave them easy singles." Vice-captain Virat Kohli's scored just two runs yesterday, but Dhoni backed his deputy to return to form soon.
"At the end of the day if you are looking to chase 300 plus runs, one or two players can't achieve it. He (Kohli) is having a lean period and I sure he will come back to form soon We have to give him time. This is something new for him.
Hopefully he will get back to his usual form and score big runs," Dhoni said. –PTI
Jayalalithaa moves SC for bail
New Delhi: Jailed former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, denied bail by Karnataka High Court following her conviction and four year sentence in a graft case, today moved the Supreme Court for bail.
The AIADMK chief, who has been behind bars for the last 12 days, challenged the High Court order which had refused her bail plea. She urged the apex court to grant an urgent hearing on her plea tomorrow during the mentioning hour.
Jayalalithaa has pleaded that she has been sentenced only for four years in the case and she is also suffering from various ailments as grounds for her immediate relief.
She said as Chief Minister she did not misuse her powers in this case.
The former Chief Minister also cited grounds of being senior citizen and woman for getting out of jail.
The 66-year-old veteran politician was denied bail by the High Court on October 7 despite the Special Public Prosecutor not objecting to grant of conditional bail to her.
In her petitions seeking immediate bail, Jayalalithaa maintained that the charge of amassing wealth against her during 1991-96 when she was the Chief Minister for the first time was false and that she had acquired property through legal means.
She also contended that the trial court had overlooked several judgements and not considered the binding nature of various income tax orders and decisions of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, which had accepted the income and the level of expenditure pleaded by her.
There "are no grounds" to give bail to Jayalalithaa.
Corruption amounts to "violation of human rights" and leads to economic imbalance, the High Court judge had said.
The HC also rejected the bail pleas by Jayalalithaa's close aide Sasikala and her relatives V N Sudhakaran, disowned foster-son of the former Chief Minister, and Ilavarasi, who have also been sent to four years in jail in the 18-year-old case.
The Special Court had held Jayalalithaa and three others guilty of corruption. The court had also slapped a fine of Rs 100 crore on the AIADMK chief and Rs 10 crore fine on each of the three other accused. -PTI

On its part, the government is reportedly keen that Facebook should take up social issues of empowering the girl child through education and involve in aggressively campaigning against female foeticide.
It also wants its help in the ambitious Ganga cleaning up project, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking up in a major way.
Zuckerbuck, on his part, is looking at deeper engagement with the government in expanding Internet penetration to villages and promoting creation of regional content.
Zuckerberg is the third high profile CEO of a US-based firm, after Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Microsoft's Satya Nadella, to visit India in last few days.
He announced that Facebook is creating a USD 1 million fund to help developers develop apps for farmers, migrants and women. This will be a contest to drive new apps and services in local languages.
"Since 2007, Facebook has been working on new apps and services in local languages. About 65 per cent use Facebook in a language other than English, including 10 Indian languages," he said. -PTI
