Jind, September19
Go frugal seems to be the mantra for most politicians in poll-bound Haryana these days. With the election authorities keeping a close watch on their expenses, the candidates — known for lavish lifestyles — have decided to shun ‘luxuries’ while campaigning.

The move comes after the deputy commissioners, who are also district election officers (DEO), released the list of rates of items to be counted in the total poll expenditure of a candidate during electioneering.

So, the cozy two-seater sofas have given way to simple plastic chairs while the workers have been directed to not go for elaborate floral decorations.

As per the list that has 59 items, the administration will add Rs 5 to the election expenditure of a candidate for using one plastic chair per day. While a non-plastic chair would cost Rs 15, a comfortable two-seater sofa will be available for Rs 200. The authorities have fixed the rate of one kg flowers at Rs 200 while a garland will cost Rs 10.

“ All candidates will have to keep a check on their expenses as poll observers are monitoring the use of money closely,” said Dr Harichand Middha, INLD MLA.

In Jind and many other districts, special teams have been formed to videograph meetings and rallies of candidates. These teams will count the number of vehicles, chairs, teacups, posters and banners used by candidates during such meetings.

“We have released the rate list of all items. Our teams are ready and we won’t allow any candidate to spend more than the fixed limit “ said Jind DC Ashok Kumar Meena. The candidates and their supporters are studying the list and altering their campaign programme accordingly.

“We have decided not to distribute sweets as it will cost us Rs 300 per kg. We will opt for samosa and pakodas, which will cost Rs 7 each. The chief guests, who don’t like cold drinks, will not be served juice as it will cost Rs 90 per litre (packed) against Rs 30 for a cold drink,” said a local leader.
