Sole witness in Badaun case fails lie detector test: CBI
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 17
In fresh twists in the Badaun alleged gangrape case in which two girls were found hanging from a tree, the CBI today said the main eyewitness had failed lie detector test, raising questions over his testimony.

The CBI said the sole witness, Nazru, had undergone a polygraphic test recently and the report indicated “inconsistency” in his statements.

Nazru had denied possessing a mobile phone, but the CBI has recovered one and has sent it for examination. It was on the basis of Nazru’s statement that the UP police had arrested five persons — Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh Yadav (all brothers) and police constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav.

In the first twist, forensic evidence based on DNA tests conducted by the agency ruled out any sexual assault on the two teenagers, prompting the agency not to file a chargesheet in the case against the five accused who had cleared lie detector test.

The two cousins were found hanging from a tree in Badaun district of UP in the last week of May. The incident had sparked a national outrage with the Samajwadi Party government in the state coming under fire on the issue of law and order situation. The CBI had also alleged the post-mortem conducted by a local doctor had discrepancies.
