He's trying to save accused: PIL
A PIL has accused the CBI Director Ranjit Sinha of trying to botch up the investigations into the coal block allocation scam to save some of the accused
The SC has directed Sinha to respond within 10 days to the charge

New Delhi, September 9
CBI Director Ranjit Singh came under Supreme Court scrutiny for the second straight day today, with the court directing him to respond within 10 days to a charge that he was attempting to botch up the investigations into the coal block allocation scam to save some of the accused.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha issued a notice to Sinha on a complaint by NGO Common Cause, one of the PIL petitioners responsible for the recent SC verdict holding that more than 200 coal blocks allocated since 1993 were illegal.

The Bench also heard day-long arguments on the fate of the coal blocks whose allocations were found to be illegal and reserved its ruling at the conclusion of submissions by the government, the PIL petitioners and the affected companies. While the Centre suggested leaving 46 allocations untouched as mining was already on or ready to begin, the companies pleaded for an opportunity to put forth their viewpoints individually.

Yesterday, another Bench headed by Justice HL Dattu sought Sinha’s response within a week to allegations that a number of accused in the 2G scam case had visited his residence several times giving rise to doubts on the seriousness of the CBI probe.
