Australian PM Tony Abbott arrives at President’s House, meets PM Modi New Delhi, Sep 05 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who is on a two-day visit in India received a ceremonial reception at the President’s House in Delhi on Friday. Present at the event to receive Abbott were Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung. The Australian PM also received the guard of honour at his arrival. Later, Abbott also visited the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay his respect to the martyrs. Abbott who arrived Thursday evening in national capital Delhi was in Mumbai on his first day of visit and had attended various functions and had launched a scholarship programme for students named New Colombo Plan.
Common man happy with Narendra Modi as prime minister: Venkaiah Naidu New Delhi, Sep 05 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that people of India are elated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Naidu was addressing a news conference with journalists at the Press Club of India. When asked about the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not taking any initiative to hold elections in Delhi, he said his party will again witness a sweeping victory if it happens. He added that with regard to holding elections in the national capital, the assessment has to be made by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. Answering a query about Congress party, blaming the BJP for trying to spread fear of terror in the country, he slammed the party by saying it is not able to reconcile to the reality of the current political situation in the country.
P Sathasivam takes oath as Governor of Kerala Trivandrum, Sep 05 (ANI): Former chief justice of India P Sathasivam on Friday took oath as the governor of Kerala at the Raj Bhavan in Trivandrum. Sathasivam was administered oath by acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court Ashok Bhushan. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, his cabinet colleagues and top officials were also present on the occasion. Sathasivam had arrived here Thursday evening to take oath as the new governor of Kerala. He succeeds former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who had resigned last week and who flew out of the state Thursday.
Heavy rains create havoc in Kashmir, rescue operations on Udhampur, Sep 05 (ANI): Heavy rains inundated many villages in Jammu and Kashmir killing at least 65 people. Incessant rains for the past about 48 hours have resulted in mud slides, flash floods and rising of water in all rivers. The Indian Army has immediately moved in deploying rescue operations in floods affected regions of Naoshera, Rajouri, Thanamandi and Poonch district of the state. The Army has been able to rescue almost 108 civilians as search and rescue operations are in full swing. Authorities declared a disaster alert in the northern region after two days of heavy rain hit villages across the Kashmir valley, causing the worst flooding in two decades.
Nagaland CM TR Zeliang suggestsLine of control to ease border tensions New Delhi, Sep 05 (ANI): Chief Minister of Nagaland, TR Zeliang suggested demarcating a ‘Line of Control’ to ensure that no new settlement comes up at the disputed inter-state boundaries of neighbouring Assam and Nagaland in a bid to ease the tension. Assam and Nagaland have been claiming tracts of land along the state limits since the creation of Nagaland more than four decades ago. The latest wave of violence has left at least 20 dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, officials said. Zeliang said Rajnath Singh had agreed upon churning a quick solution to the problem.
