Srinagar, August 27
The Upper House of the state legislature on Wednesday was adjourned for the day after pandemonium over a resolution proposing to urge New Delhi to resume talks with Pakistan.

As soon as the House met this morning, Member Legislative Council (MLC) of the ruling National Conference (NC) Shehnaz Ganai raised a point of order informing Legislative Council Chairman Amrit Malhotra that her calling attention motion over the cross-LoC shelling was not listed in the business.

The Council had listed the resolution moved by National Conference MLC Devender Singh Rana, seeking resumption of Indo-Pak talks to ensure peace and stability in the sub-continent and Jammu and Kashmir.

“I had moved the calling attention motion on Tuesday on the cross-LoC shelling and I was told that it will be clubbed with resolution moved by another member for discussion on Wednesday,” she said.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Congress and Panther’s Party legislators stood up and supported Ganai. The members alleged discrimination and politicisation of the issue at the behest of Rana.

On this, the members threatened stage a walk out. The Council Chairman assured that Ganai’s calling attention motion would be taken up for discussion along with the resolution after the Question Hour.

As the Deputy Chairman of the Council announced that there would be discussion on the resolution moved by Rana, the members stood up and protested for not mentioning the calling attention motion of Ganai. “Calling attention motion of Ganai was bypassed. It is sad that again the motion has been ignored which the Chairman of the House had clubbed for discussion today,” shouted an MLC. This annoyed Rana who urged the Deputy Chairman that he would withdraw the resolution for the resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue.
