Mumbai, August 24
Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan today submitted his resignation after the Central government announced his transfer to Mizoram last night. Sources in Raj Bhavan said Sankaranarayanan sent his resignation this morning shortly after the transfer orders reached him.

"Today I resigned. I have been here for four-and-a-half years. It is not possible for me to go to Mizoram now. There is no other reason," said Sankaranarayanan. He had taken over as the Governor of Maharashtra on January 22, 2010 and was granted a fresh tenure in office in 2012. His tenure was due to end in 2017.

Before taking up the gubernatorial assignment in Maharashtra, Sankaranarayanan (82) was Governor of Nagaland and Jharkhand. The outgoing Governor said he would be a free man after demitting office. "My tongue will have another two inches from tomorrow. I am a free citizen," Sankaranarayanan said.

"It is not right for me to reveal the reasons behind my resignation," he said. He would return to active politics after quitting office, he added.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli took the additional charge as Governor of Maharashtra at a brief ceremony tonight.

"As the Governor, I wasn't involved in politics. From today, I will definitely be involved in active politics."'
